How far in advance was the show mapped out?

A discussion in another thread here made me curious to ask.

I'm assuming that Carter had at least mapped out all of season 1 before they started shooting the series but what about beyond that? I don't recall ever seeing any interview with Chris where he mentions whether or not he had any ideas for the end game for the show. My instinct tells me no.

Chris Carter had a general outline through season 5 IIRC.

They also got to improvise a lot. Gillian Anderson's unexpected pregnancy allowed Carter to play with what ever he had mapped out already.

Yeah I knew the whole Duane Barry/alien abduction plot was improvised due to Anderson's pregnancy. Carter did a great job handling that.
