The Post-Modern Prometheus

One of the best episodes of TV (and X-files) ever.

This is one of my personal favourites. The black and white is spellbinding, especially so in this episode where the Vancouver rain and mist and breath-vapour clings to the imagery. And both leads look great throughout, their faces timeless. The ending is the sweetest ending The X-Files ever had, it's a joyous fan-moment, a celebration of The X-Files, of Mulder 'n' Scully, of all the sojourns in all the strange places, the endless running in the dark after their bizarre quarry.

Buuuuuut. This is not an episode that fares well when one actually contemplates the plot and the depredations of the monster. It doesn't sit well when there's so much sentiment attached to a story that involves a serial rapist. But in saying all that I still invariably fall under its spell. I'm not a fan of Carter's script but I do like his direction and all the Cher-infused moments are choreographed beautifully. This is often cited as one of Duchovny's all-time favourites and unsurprisingly Carter's, too.

reply

Duchovny is solid when rating things but Chris Carter is way too generous.

reply

The "monster" is not a "serial rapist". It's explained in the episode that the grandfather was artificially inseminating the women.

reply

I'm pretty sure drugging and impregnating women without consent constitutes rape. In his monologue at the end he clearly states that what they did was wrong and that he was complicit in the crimes, hence why he's going to jail. Carter of course paints all this in such a sentimental light that the townspeople, rather condescendingly, seem willing to forgive these "trespasses" Mutato spoke of.

reply

This conversation has occurred many times with others making the same mistake you did, where you clearly suggested the monster was raping the women...which he wasn't.

THAT is what I referred to, nothing else.

reply

I think I already explained that the monster, or Mutato if you will, was complicit in the crimes and that said crimes constitute rape. Anything beyond that is merely inference on your part. Nowhere in my original post did I describe the mechanics of rape or who did what.

reply

Which is just further proof that you and others still don't put enough thought into your own initial comments to make such distinctions clear, or into my comments that have been made on this message board regarding the episode/subject.

I'm pretty sure drugging and impregnating women without consent constitutes rape.

Yes, it does. I find it disturbing that some people don't seem to see this.

reply

I still find it disturbing that some people will voice opinions as disturbing as they can without qualifying them with the distinctions to make the accusations they're making absolutely clear, and when called on their unclear comments, continue to double-down rather than admit that they should have made themselves clearer from the very beginning.

reply

To each his own. I feel the exact opposite.

reply

I found cher's song I was walking in Memphis a nice highlight. It was a bittersweet ending.

reply

More episodes should have been in black and white. The format and the series really go well together.

reply

I had to.

Yes the black and white format made it one of my favorites. I think they should've tackled more movie monsters like Dracula or the wolfman. I know the weremonster would've been perfect in black & white

reply

"Triangle" could have gone the "Prometheus" route since it depicts a time in history when much of our media was in black and white

And yes they missed an opportunity to reference the heyday of Universal monsters as well as one of "The X File"'s most beloved episodes by not shooting the were-monster in black and white.

reply

Triangle where they go back in time on a sub during the 1930s? Or was that were Mulder and Scully were moving towards the Bermuda triangle and aging. If so I think either one could and would feel like a twilight done episode

reply

I believe it's the former you mentioned though I thought it was an ocean liner not a sub. And the ocean liner is boarded by Nazis, with Skinner and Cigarette Smoking Man, among the goose-steppers.

reply

Yeah it was an oceanliner. If only

reply

Nice name too
