Time Trax 2006

Had this show been made in 2006, it would have totally been popular. It was just a head of its time when it first aired. Too bad!

If given a second chance, with some good (no "popluar") writers, I think it would flourish -- especially on the Sci-Fi Channel, who should be showing reruns of it anyway, instead of countless SG1 reruns.

I worked on the first series of Time Trax and I can tell you the equipment we had at the time was a far cry from what I use now. I would have loved to be doing some of the FX with my current gear. I glad people liked the show, it was a good show to work on.

What did you do on the show, stevetedman?

reply

At the time I was an 'online editor'. My major role was the shots involving the holigram character, from memory Selma was her name. As I said the gear we had was far from the state of art stuff now, and the blue screens of Selma were a challenge to say the least. The other fx guy did wonders with limited tool kit as well.

Would you mind giving us an overview of how the hologram was done? And yes, SELMA (I believe it stood for something but I can't remember what, right now) was the name. What was it like, to work with Elizabeth Alexander, who played Selma?

reply

Sure
She was shot on blue screen studio useing a video split on set for eye line and any other interaction. From memory the lead actor (Dale I think) liked to walk around while he spoke to her, so the eye line thing was crucial. it also meant her size relationship had to be spot on, as I couldn't resize her due to the eye line problems. When I got the blue screens I would split them into layers via a box called 'Ultimatte', set up the overall look of her ie transparentcy and position etc. The layers were all supplied to another box called 'Harriet' where the turning on/off and static fx was added. As far as working with the actress, I tend to remember her being very pleasant. Long time ago now. We only did the post on the first series with the post on series 2 awarded to a US company as the show was a US production and they wanted it to remain closer to home. All in all it was a good time.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed working on it, because I certainly enjoyed it. Yeah, Dale Midkiff starred as Darien Lambert. So, you're Australian? What else have you done?

reply

Mainly TV commercials, but currently just finishing off the first series of a kids/teen show called H2O Just ad water. It's also been fun. There is already a forum and a bit of a following from fans, so it too might be a bit of a hit. I think one of the forum guys has even offered up an episode or 2 on a torrent website. Anyway nice chatting I better gat back to work.

I have a good friend in Texas who loves H2O Just add water. We were just talking about Australian TV shows and he brought it up.

I recall reading something in a 90s TIME TRAX magazine I got from a local TV station about Dale saying how much time Elizabeth spent in the studio doing blue screen but that she used to drop by once in a while and that he enjoyed working with her.

--(I believe it stood for something but I can't remember what, right now)--

SELMA stood for Specified Encapsulated Limitless Memory Archive, the chief told Darien in the first episode when he promoted Darien to captain and gave her to him.

reply

Yes it was ahead of its time but in ways it reminded me of Quantum Leap and it was a very successful show to watch in the early 90's.
