Question - how did this happen?

In the pilot episode, when that captured ... Can't remember his name... And he was in the jail cell, when he licked the envelope which had TXP in it, he vanished into the past. How did this happen without him being in the Trax machine?

I'd need to re-watch but I thought they explained it...

much like when Darian sends them Home, the combination of the TXP and the transmission tone activates the 'leap'

I thought it was established that the machine could be used over distance as well as time. Sambei only jumped into the machine because he hadn't directed it at a target. Unfortunately he killed his hostage in the process.

Rewatching now on DVD. The Trax machine has to be on either the sending or receiving end to work. In the case of Sepp Dietrich Sambei used the machine to pull him out of the cell. Then he sent him into the past on another transmission.
