Patrick Stewart or Avery Brooks?

Who is better actor and better in Star Trek?

Patrick Stewart plays Captain Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek Next Generation (1987-1994), it's later films (1994-2002) and even appears in the first episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 (1993-1999)

Averk Brooks plays Captain Sisko in Deep Space 9.

I personally prefer Stewart, a great actor and Picard was a good character

Just look at my photo in the top left hand corner and you've got your answer. Yes, that's right, I prefer Hawk.

Spenser with an "S", like the poet.

Yeah...Ben Sisko & and his mothah *beep* ing pimp hand!

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Avery Brooks is a little too dramatic for my taste, though I know part of that was the character. I guess my answer would be Stewart over Brooks, but Sisko over Picard. The characters are so different though, it's hard to judge. I haven't seen Brooks elsewhere, and with Stewart, I haven't seen him in many other roles either.

meh, whenever i see him in anything else, i'm still waiting for him to ask anyone "What do you think, Number One". It's probably a good thing that he was never a one-note actor, getting into pretty much anything that wasn't star-trekish.

I think Patrick Stewart is better overall. But he wouldn't have been as good playing Sisko as Avery Brooks was.

reply

Well I'd say it's pretty common in all shows, even comedies, for the writing to adapt over time to better fit the actors. So you get to a point where it becomes "impossible" for anyone else to have played the role.

But if Stewart had been in the role since the start, I expect the show would have gone in some different directions. And then it could have become impossible to imagine Avery Brooks having done it.

reply

Totally agree with you kerryedavis . But personally I prefer Patrick/Picard - but that's just a personal opinion.

reply

I didn't dislike sisco or but Patrick Stewart is by far a better actor that Avery Brooks

reply

Yeah, it's not even close in my opinion. Avery is just so over the top and hammy at times. I would say it was the character but he is like that in other roles as well.

reply

I personally like Avery Brooks a lot. I don't get the hate for him, maybe the haters just hate BLACKS, like the losers they are.

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

reply

I doubt anyone really hates Avery Brooks, but as for his acting...

I didn't even find the worst examples here, but it's a start.

There's an episode of The Love Boat (story line "Tell Her She's Great") in which Isabel Sanford plays Isaac's aunt, who had recently tried her hand at community theater and found she was a terrible actress. In an effort to spare her feelings, Isaac and the crew compliment her performance. The praise goes to her head and we get to see some marvelous bad acting.

The other day I was watching Avery Brooks enunciate in a particularly dramatic scene and it was like deja vu. He sounded just like Isaac's aunt!

Avery Brooks is fine most of the time, but when things get very dramatic he seems to forget that he's on the small screen, not the stage.

Somehow, the sputtery/stuttery stuff doesn't seem appropriate for the stage, either.

reply

Er, what? The character is dramatic and loud. The show even addresses this...

Bashir: Now, try not to yell at any more admirals for a while.
Sisko: I wasn't yelling, I was just expressing my feelings - loudly.

(One of my favorite Sisko lines btw. LOL)

Addressing that it can sometimes (or for some people, often) go too overboard has nothing to do with his race.

He also gets a lot of love for it. Well, at least, the character does.

If you don't care for an actor's performance, and he happens to be black, you are a racist? What an idiot.

I think, overall, Patrick Stewart is the better actor. But I prefer the character Sisko. There's so much more depth to him. Yes, Avery Brooks overacts a bit sometimes (was he trying to emulate Shatner?) but it fits the character. Star Trek always had slightly heightened dialogue anyway, the theatrical deliveries are part of the show for me.

I think you're confusing presentation with depth. There was plenty of depth to Picard, no less than any other Trek captain, though maybe it just wasn't always so obvious to the eye.

Stewart might have more depth, but not likeable IMO! He's put his ship in more danger with his own curiosity than can be counted! He's the one that puts his crew in jeopardy, then has to save the day! Janeway's about the same on "Voyager!" Watching "Blink Of An Eye" and she orders them to get closer to a planet they say is reminiscent of a collapsed star! You know things had to go haywire then! Idiots! ๎€ธ ๎€ฉ ๎—
