Avery Brook's acting?

it's Shakespearean right or is it what they call "chewing the scenery"?

It always gets me sometimes. Dude acted the hell out of this show. Far better then other captains (sorry Jean Luc)

reply

I think he's fine when he's understated or contemplative. When he's giving orders or being overly emotive, his staccato style speech delivery is often unbearable.

Sisko was an emotional guy (seasons 4 onward) so Brooks played him as such.

reply

Love Sisko - and yes he is more interesting than Picard.

reply

As an actor, Brooks can chew up scenery when he gets gung-ho crazy. Case in point in season 5's "For The Uniform". He's going batsh** crazy in that particular episode.

Honestly, the only actor out of the 5 captains who really sold me was Patrick Stewart's. Second would be Mulgrew's Janeway (even though she went apesh** nuts in season 6's "Equinox part 2". I did like how she had to be more emotionally invested in her crew than other captains since they were stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

reply

That's what I liked about him and why he's my favorite Captain (leader). When he's cool he's the coolest. When he's hot he's steaming. He chews ass like a drill sergeant but with no cursing.

Sisko totally captured the phrase "chew bubble gum and kickass" except he always had bubble gum.

No Sitcoms! No Sports! No Reality! Death to the new timeline!

reply

Yup - totally. When he gets excited he has this weird delivery that really pulls you out of the scenes. It's distracting.

I initially didn't like Captain Sisko for that reason, but his relationship with Jake changed everything. IMHO it was the best family dynamic ever done on Star Trek and saved this character for me.

reply

You can't possibly be serious? His acting is actually terrible, it's really terrible, Such ATROCIOUS delivery in most of his lines.

The only exceptional acting is his overly melodramatic (but understandably so) racism episode when he wrote the newspaper.

He's a genuinely terrible actor in this show, but I perservere regardless.

reply

No way... you're opinion, though respectable - is off base.

reply

i fully agreed with you! Im rewatching and half way through season 4 and it is hard to keep going!! Lol everybody seems to love his acting... Everyone has an opinion but he is pretty damn bad! When hes mad and yelling he looks like hes gunna laugh haha well at least we get worf to fix the show!!:)

reply

I love that my post is here and I can reply to it!

reply

Cool eh? Btw I totally agree with you. In the end it was the main reason I never finished the show (stopped around S05 or so) or loved it the same way as TNG or Voyager. The captain is just SO important for these shows, and Brooks never did it for me. Shame, as DS9 was quite good, specially with it's more ambitious story arch.

reply

I feel like he's the black version of Cpt. Kirk. Same odd and unnatural delivery of the lines in each dialogue.

But at least there were plenty of decent actors playing supportive roles (in DS9).

reply

His acting was hammy as shit.

But it worked for the character.

reply

Sisko is the only Star Trek Captain I care about. A lot has to do with his stellar acting.

His best performance in the show was in the episode “Far Beyond the Stars”.

If given the right script, I think he could win an Oscar.

Just look at his performance in “American History X”.

reply

Yep, his acting is top notch and I couldn't have imagined a better lead for DS9.

reply

My dad often joked about that. Sometimes it works for him, sometimes it's just really over-the-top. In fact, the actor inspired dad to joke about other actors on Star Trek shows that joined the "Avery Brook's School of Severe Overacting."

reply

Disliked Sisko from the start. His acting turned me off big time. I quit DS9 near the end of S1 and it took me years before I came back. Even then, I never watched the last episodes. I really ended up loving most of the characters (most) but again, I grew too tired of Sisko to stick with it. And I watched all of voyager! That tells you my opinion of Sisko better than anything. I was less put off by Neelix's holographic lungs than by him.

reply

I've heard this before. His acting was perfectly fine. Some people just didn't like his somewhat "Shakespearean" style delivery at times. I don't think the Shatner comparisons are at all fair.

reply

Brooks' performance is far from terrible. However there are moments in DS9 where Sisko absolutely flips out in scenes where there was no need for it...Like some malfunctioning thespian android.

A wonderfully written character nonetheless. A total badass Captain.
