How was it that they had two shows of this around the same time?

I remember them both, even though I mainly watched this one as opposed to the more serious one. I know Sega owns the rights to the Sonic character, but I am wondering how they had two shows, one was syndicated, the other was on ABC.

ABC wanted DiC to create a Sonic cartoon, so they came up with silly The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. ABC didn't like it, so DiC dumped it in one of their syndication blocks and created the more serious Sonic the Hedgehog.
