I was literally coming here to ask the same question. I just finished rewatching seaquest. It seems like an odd way to end a series.

No. They were supposed to get a full season, but I don't believe there was the possibility of renewal for another season. Somewhere on Youtube is a video of the last take shot where Michael Ironsides breaks character to say the show getting canned isn't the fault of the production team, not sure if he says anything about the renewal or whatnot.

There were at least three scripts ready to be shot for the second half of the season, including one by J. Brandis.
