Did this start out to be TNG of the Sea ?

I just started the series on Netflix and the cast parallels with TNG are noticeable . They already have a Picard, a Wesley, a Riker, a Dr. Crusher, the counselor holo is Troi, Darwin is Data etc.

NO. This show was the opposite of geek trek.

Actually, David Kemper was lead writing supervisor for the series, and he was also a contributor to STTNG. The similarities are definitely there, as well as the peculiar "21 Jump Street" connections.

Yeah basically, and it was on network TV (NBC).

Season 1 was definitely an attempt at TNG but mainstreaming it using 90s fashion and trends. I dont know what season 2 was supposed to be, maybe an attempt at X Files, its half good and half awful.

Yeah, I think that's why I liked the show so much when it came along. It was essentially TNG under the sea.'

LOL I was actually coming in here to post that EXACT thread and then I saw this post.

this show was insanely like TNG. just started watching it this month and me and my friend actually refer to Lucas as "Wesley". there's many other obvious parallel characters as well but I think they were taking the mick when they bought in a empathy in season 2. even the music and cinematography reminded me so much of TNG.
But I think that's what made seaQuest awesome because TNG is one of my all-time fav shows.
