A Different World was not called The Cosby Show: The College Years.

So why call this Saved by the Bell: The College Years? If they treated it as a full spinoff and independent show, it may have survived longer. They wouldn't have to be tied down to the expectations of a Saturday morning audience and could deal with more adult themes, in line with Fresh Prince, Seinfeld or other hot NBC shows of the time.

I would guess because ADW dealt with a whole new group of characters except for Denise whereas TCY included four characters from the original show.

reply

I think that's a poor comparison. When ADW premiered TCS was still in production. What kind of sense would it have made to call ADW TCS:The College Years when TCS was still in production and only Denise was going to star in the show? SBTB had already cease production so SBTH:The College Years was a perfect title for this show. What would you have called it?

reply

Well, the fact that Cosby was only on three episodes of the show as a guest star probably factored in to the decision. Why would you call something "The Cosby Show" when Cosby isn't even there?

agree with the reasoning---same reason The Facts of Life is not called 'Different Strokes part II etc" but gets it's own title when she is the only one spun off

reply

I agree with the OP but this has to be the worse example to prove that point.

reply

Bad example but ultimately they kept the Saved by the Bell moniker for familiarity reasons. Unfortunately that is probably one of the main reasons it got cancelled from primetime because the older audiences dismissed it as an extension of the Saturday morning kids show despite the fact that they were trying to move into more mature territory.

Actually Mark-Paul looked good as an adult. Was surprised how handsome he had become.
