Better than Streets Of Laredo.....

OF COURSE IT IS, Rtld is a great sequel to the original i know a lot of people that feel the same and don't see why some people hate it when it was a good sequel and to me better than streets of laredo or dead man's walk.

I agree. I think the numbers are probably more people like this than Streets of Laredo, and I think if you take BOTH stories and take people that know nothing about them and make them watch them, and DONT tell them which one Mcmurtry wrote, it would be overwhelmingly positive on this one.

I think some people have a real allegiance to the author, and side with him regardless of the merits of the story.

McMurtry is a true genius, and Lonesome Dove is one of the best novels Ive ever read, but as far as sequels go, I find this much more true to Lonesome Dove than Streets.

Heck, the characters in Streets dont even seem like themselves. Theres NOTHING in Lorena from streets that resembles the character in LD, and Pea eye is younger and smarter. Call as a bounty hunter?

In this they got a LOT of the same actors back, and it seems like the same characters and they're still at the ranch, it just feels like Lonesome Dove.

Yes, Jedi Colt - and Pea Eye was extremely well-developed in rtld - in fact, he nearly stole the show! What a fine characterization - unforgettable.

Streets of Laredo:

Sam Shephard did a fine acting job in sol but the character was not the Pea Eye we knew and loved from ld and rtld.

Ditto Sissy Spacek - another acclaimed actor, but the character as presented was not the Lorena of the first two movies. Also, though Spacek was, as always, strong, attractive and interesting to look at, she was never as outright pretty and beautiful as the original Lorena.

Nor was Blue Duck very well represented in the flashbacks - he didn't resemble Fred Forrest at all - he was too refined-looking (resembled Ted Danson to me when I first saw him) - not at all the savage grotesquerie that was the true Blue Duck. It was as if the producers thought, "Okay - it's been years since they've seen LD, and there are lots of viewers who never saw it. Plus this is only a flashback - so we don't need to be careful about who plays Blue Duck..."

You can't go wrong with James Garner, who I thought was great as Capt. Call. In the intervening (17 ?) years from the setting of the original story, Call has aged a lot, and Garner portrays this perfectly. Granted, he was not Tommy Lee Jones - but then, who is? Voight did a competant job with Call in rtld - I thought he was a worthy choice.

Also - a word re: sol soundtrack. I thought it was very fine, especially the themes for Joey Garza and the "family-Mexican" music for Maria and her kids. But the utterly sappy love theme for Pea Eye and Lora makes me gag every time I hear it. It's so saccharine it could kill a diabetic.

i don't know why mcumrtrey wrote sol like he did it didn't seem like a lonesome dove story, didn't have the feel if u know what i mean, too dark , it was like he just wanted the series over with and just done sol. rtld is the true sequel to me and thanks for the replys, i also liked walker in rtld is memorable character.

IA and putting Pea Eye w/her was utterly stupid - I guess bc I remember the ORIGINAL actor -character who played him. The author did a freaking 180 on Pea Eye's character; I will always love the Pea Eye character from LD & RtLD. Sam Shepard is a great actor but he just wasn't the Pea Eye we ALL loved so much. I think Lorena should've ended up w/Dish, afterall he loved her so much and it would have made a better match b/w them.

Streets of Laredo and Dead mans walk were a total waste of time. Rtld was a great sequel, Jon Voight played his part very well but somehow it would have been way better if they could have got Tommy Lee Jones back as Captain Call.

exact;y, i agree with you, but i did like dead mans walk, not A masterpiece, but a good prequel with flaws, but sol i totally dislike, same witrh the book version, in my personal view rtld was the final chapter of the L.D saga Gideon Walker was an amaxing character as well in rtld and his final shootout was classic...
anyway thanks for the reply.

Everyone like story to stay true to the author, but I quite simply enjoyed this movie more than Streets of Laredo.

I think McMurtry had a stroke after Lonesome Dove. He never was the same.
