It gets to be too much

I appreciate how well acted it is, etc, but this is the third episode (or year I guess) of this series we have have watched, and all the sexual seediness is getting to be too much. Are the rest of the years all based on deviant and decadent sex? Enough already.

One needs only to watch a series like Foyle's War to see how great a drama can be without many sex crimes.

LaPlante tends to favor this kind of thing, to help sell the program. The later series (without her involvement) get away from it, though never fully. Prime Suspect 4 features 3 distinct stories: the disappearance of an infant, with the prime suspect a pedophile; the murder of a man, tied to a country club, and a copy cat killing, tied to the original series. So, it never fully escapes those things; but, the copy cat episode focuses more on whether Tennison was right or did she bring down an innocent man, furthering themes from the early half of PS1.

Prime Suspect 5 revolves around an untouchable criminal boss and drug dealer. Prime Suspect 6 involves the murder of a young immigrant woman, tied to the atrocities in the Balkans. PS7 focuses on Tennison's alcoholism and the murder of a teenage girl. there are prurient aspects there; but, not as deeply as the earlier series.

LaPlante's other police shows, Above Suspicion and The Commander, seemed to focus on sexually-related crimes, though I confess I haven't seen all of them. What I did see turned me off and I quit watching.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

I'm not a big fan myself, but in terms of subject matter it's nothing if not relevant. Even today (literally), there was a man on the news defending his dead politician father against accusations of raping vulnerable underage boys, with the investigation allegedly obstructed by police chiefs.

I did wonder how much of that Prime Suspect was based on truth? Looking back, the notion of there being a paedophile ring with high ranking members of the police and politicians, doesn't seem as an unlikely as it did when the episodes were first shown.

Sorry to hear that.
