Anyone know what 'Phenom' means?

I remember seeing the programm in the tv listings for stv back then (I can't beleive it was 1993, i thought it was 1992, i'm actually thinking it aired in the uk in 1994) & thought the programm was alright, though i remember misreading the name in the listings thinking it said phenomenon (3 years before the Travolta film, though that's got nothing to do with this) then reading it again i saw it said phenom. But exactly what does phenom mean? any ideas?

reply

It's short for phenomenon. She was a prodigy tennis star...

I'm not saying you're wrong but, wikipedia says it means someone who is hip & popular. Although I do remember a couple of days ago on a website, or on the sport news, (I'm not really a sports fan, though I have recently thought of getting into sport, though I have always liked snooker), I cant really remember if it was a site or a programm though not this programm another programm actually I think it was a programm I heard it and it was about a sports player.

stop overthinking it. its short for phenomenon, since that's what she is in the world of tennis. that's exactly where the creators got the name. stop being a moron. i hate you.

Sorry for overexplaining it, it might be a symtom of aspergers syndrome. When i read it just now it was a lot of rubbish for nothing. and kindly stop the name calling please. thanks.

like i said to the walking dead i have aspergers syndrome which you probably know is a disaibity. i shouldn't have explained it as much, but sometimes i cant help it though i should be able to, oh and please dont call me a goddamn idiot again as it's not a nice thing to say. thanks.

What the heck is wrong with some people? This kid is asking what a word means & he gets a reply from not one, but TWO people who call him names? One who calls him an idiot after he says he has aspergers syndrome--similar to autism?

Craig, I believe the first response to your question is correct. I always understood the show title to just be short for "phenomenon."

Hey guys,

I have all of the episodes and in one of the early ones, it's explained by Angela's coach, Lou Della Rossa, that a phenom is "someone who is born to play the game." A natural. That's what Angela was.

It is indeed a sports term. It's not short for "phenomenon."

I hate this kind of bickering on the IMDb boards, which is mainly why I rarely ever involve myself. However, if you were to check the dictionary, you would find that the word "phenom" is indeed a shortened form of the word "phenomenon." It is technically considered to be slang. I hope this clears things up.
