Is Sipowicz the greatest tv character ever?

Why yes, I do believe he is : )

When youre watching the show and Andy is doing his thing, dont you ever think "Man I wish I could be that cool/badass/funny?"

I think Franz was great in the role, but no, Sipowicz is not the greatest TV character ever. I would put him in my top 5 favorite TV cops. Greatest TV character of all time is probably Archie Bunker. You could make an argument for Matt Dillon, Lucy Ricardo, The Fonz, Hawkeye Pierce, Tony Soprano or even Jerry Seinfeld.

Best Wishes,

Fitz

While Sipowicz is close to the best Capt Frank Furillo was by far the best ever. If you don't know how he is you missed the standard by which all future cop shows were based.

I would rank him with Carroll O'Connor of All in the Family.

reply

He is certainly up there.

Andy Sipowicz
Al Sweargen (Deadwood)
Archie Bunker
Vic Mackey

"No f@cking sh`t lady does it sound like I'm ordering a pizza!"

He is in my book. Awesome character.

I loved how the show showed Andy's growth from a drunk and smoker to a lo I g husband and father,

Greatest character arc on TV, greatest actor and best cop on TV. I did like Daniel Traventi but he comes across kind of douchey outside of the show, unlike Franz who seems like one of the nicest, coolest men on and off the set.

On a side note, if the makers of Walking Dead played their cards better, they could have made Michael Rookers Merle make an even stronger turn as villain turned hero.

I heard that Dennis Franz was a very nice man who was loved by his fans and cast members alike.

reply

Yes. He really was a dedicated father. Made peace with his demons and redeemed himself as a father.

reply

My gut instinct is to say Yes, he is.

But I don't like to get carried away, so I've been trying to think of a better one... I just can't. I don't even think anyone on Parks & Rec tops him, and I'm always babbling about how great every character on that show is.

Denis Franz's portrayal of Sipowicz was one of the most memorable characters ever. His personal demons, tragedies, growth etc. Great writing for the part as well. Yeah I have to agree.

reply

Do agree Andy evolved from being a drunk to a family man and better cop who was like a father figure to his fellow cops.
