When the show was on in the 90's, Superman's powers, as they were written in the comic books, made it easy for Superman to be with Lois, as once she was within his "Aura", she was protected. If you read any of the John Byrne Superman Comics, it made sense.
But here is another way to see that explanation from the movie point of view: There are two comments made in the Superman movies (Reeve Original and Returns) where Superman tells Lois she won't be cold flying with him, or where Lois comments on how warm he is. This is the "Aura" extending around her.
When Superman catches the Helicopter by the "leg", it should have broken off in his hand, but his "Aura" extended around it, simply by him touching it, which prevented it from breaking under its own weight.
By extension, Lois wouldn't "Break" while she is within Superman's Aura. Or to put it less delicately, she wouldn't "break" while he was within her.
