An entire year since Dave's last show.

Amazing how times flies, and how his look has changed now with the hermit-like beard.

Those photos of him jogging that came out a couple of months ago were hilarious. He looked like an alternate universe Santa Claus or something. If he just cruised past me jogging along on the sidewalk someday I probably wouldn't even recognize him.

...a whole year already, dang.

What really floored me when he retired was that the set wasn't preserved someplace. I saw interviews where Dave said that he didn't want it and apparently no one else did either. As a fan, I wanted it to go to a television museum or to the Smithsonian, but instead it was in dumpsters within 48 hours of the last show.

I also remember that Dave said in some of his final interviews before the last show that he likely will never return to the Ed Sullivan Theater because it just wouldn't be the same. I still hold out hope that he will change his mind and pay Colbert a visit someday.

Oh well... let's hear it for YouTube. When I get nostalgic for Dave there's no shortage of Letterman stuff to punch up.

Real clear case of undervaluing something of historic significance. If ever there was a reason for some dumpster-diving...

Oprah still needs to arrange some kind of joint Letterman & Leno interview on OWN. It's just gotta happen.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer found the set from the Merv Griffin Show in a dumpster. Life imitates art.

Yes!

Yeah that really pissed me off knowing the set was thrown away. Was there not anyone who saved at least something? I mean, damn... I would have kept the entire thing and made my room into my own Late Show... kinda depressing to be honest. How can people just throw out stuff like that?...

reply

And not a single fuct given....he stayed 15 years too long.

He stayed 15 years too long.

Yes, Dave should've retired earlier than he did. But he couldn't stand to let Jay outlast him, and anyways their mutual hero Johnny Carson stayed past his prime, too. I guess it's just really hard walking away from a great job like that.

That's the second Halloween now without Dave's parade of new kids' costumes. It was such a great tradition. Really miss that bit.

I think Dave also felt a lot of responsibility to his staff who worked so hard for him. One example is even though he had to fire his hot tempered cue card guy during the last season-Dave still paid him all the way thru to the final episode.

Shall we play a game?

reply

Yeah, "Inky". Well, that's nice that Dave looked after him like that. Thanks.
