Key West on DVD!

This original post was: "Check out the posting on the Key West comment board from Cloudscapes (page 2). He has offered to make DVDs, does a great job for a VERY reasonable price- picture from the show lasered on each disc (set of 4), plastic cases with more pictures from the show and an insert with the episodes and dates. ..."

Since this was originally posted the info has changed and cloudscapes is no longer making DVD sets. However I have made sets for those who want copies and the copies I have made thus far have been of quite good quality. If you're interested, you can find contact information at at http://keywesttv.tumblr.com/. You can also see what the cases and DVDs look like and find bits of trivia about the show!

I have the entire series on DVD. I taped them onto VHS and then transferred them to DVD so you can tell they were on VHS but they are still very good quality. I will sell you a copy for $30 plus $5 shipping. Please let me know if you are interested.

i would love them

reply

They are in ioffer for less than $20.

reply

Indeed you can. The quality, however, is not that great.

I am in the middle of downloading it from a torrent. Once I have it all (which should be a few more days, I'll post upload links for people to download it from for free. People shouldn't have to pay for bootleg rips.

If you can get it to people for free, that's terrific! Where is the original file coming from? At some point the show had to be transferred from VHS to DVD to file-- there is always going to be some degradation... unless you somehow finagled the file from Viacom...

Nevertheless your free offer does not take away from the Cloudscapes efforts. He did a fantastic job, went above and beyond... because of a love for the show, not to make money. Making a DVD by hand without the aid of mass media production is laborous and, if not incredibly expensive, still costly work...

pearlheartgtr has it finished downloading yet? I would really love to see this show.

There is a torrent file up that is constantly seeding. I tried uploading to rapidshare (and some of the other file sites) but the upload would have been over an hour for each part (the files had to be broken into 4-5 parts) and it would be even longer for someone to download them. Unless there is a premium rapid account to work with, I'm kinda stuck. Not to mention, the rapid server constantly quitting on me while I upload. So just run to the torrent link.

You don't have to have a Bit Torrent program to download. You can also set your p2p program or file manager to handle torrents. I've tried it but I've found best luck with uTorrent.

The complete series is available from a lady at:

I'm the person who transferred the original VHS recordings I made from a cable TV connection(not airwave) on to DVD. I had all but the first pilot episode and was able to obtain a copy of that episode from her to incorporate into my complete set that I made. The quality of the original set she had was not quite as good as what I had, so as a trade off I sent her the complete set I made and told her to have at it as I don't have the time to devote to selling or distributing them. The very beginning of the pilot episode is a bit glitchy as they show Seamus in the NJ factory discovering he won the lottery. But once the show's logo and music appear on the screen, the problem goes away. There is one other episode in the beginning (3rd or 4th) where there's a small glitch for about two seconds. The rest all turned out very well and look ok on a screen up to about 32". Anything larger, they begin to look blurry, but so do many other VHS recordings at 240 lines.
When there's nothing else available and they won't release it officially, you make do with what you can. And these are the best it gets, for now.

I am very glad to find your post today. I always hoped to find "Key West" on either VHS or DVD. I went to the URL listed in your post and promptly ordered the DVDs.

I used to watch "Key West" then right after that watch "Northern Exposure." Loved both shows for their campy humour and geographical locations.

Thanks for getting me reconnected.

I have to ask... Why isn't Cloudscapes posting himself? Just a little weird for me.

As for the quality, for all I know, the original uploader did a vhs rip and encoded to a downloadable format. Or they could have bought one of Cloud's dvd's and ripped and encoded to a downloadable format. Either way, the show is there.

I will stand by what I had posted at an earlier date: It is wrong to charge people for a bootleg (in which the dvd's are). I don't care how much trouble a person went through or how much time they put into it. Might be a labor of love but charging more than the actual materials is a bit absurd.

It doesn't take much to download a few pictures or to produce a few screen grabs. Less than a night's work for that and encoding. To charge $30 plus after that gets to the realm of ridiculous and for profit. It's not like he is personalizing each dvd and starting the whole process over and over again. The files are saved and burned at his convenience.

I know people who get shows and concerts that do the same work (cover images and menue items)but they offer it for FREE on a torrent site or for $5 to cover the materials and shipping. Now THAT'S a labor of love to spread amongst the fans.

I was one of those people checking iOffer and saw the dvd's for sale. But I was lucky enough to be on Demonoid where another fan uploaded the show. Sure, it took me a few weeks to get it because he was the only one seeding at the time but in the long run, I saved myself $30-$40 I didn't need to spend.

Not everyone has money to drop. Some of us are broke as all hell and want to be able to enjoy something we are passionate about and love. If a taste is offered for free, then we might as well grab it.

Cloudscapes is a friend of mine and doesn't generally get into the posting thing. This is my thing. I got a set from him and he indicated he wouldn't mind doing it for others so I thought I'd let people know.

As for the cost... first of all, you have a great deal of gall! Cloudscapes is NOT charging $30+. He charged $20 and did not charge shipping!!!! He is charging what it takes to make the set which I stated in an earlier message. And that barely covers the cost for materials. As he is a friend, I know how much he pays for the lightscribe DVDs, the color cases, and the color INK, the envelopes and mailing them. The fee does not even begin to TOUCH the time he is putting in-- burning them and then getting them to the post office... and in addition there have been a few cases where he has simply given them away! And all for perfect strangers because he hopes they will enjoy the show as much as he does.

I also stated specifically to YOU that it was terrific that you were offering it free by putting it into a bit torrent. I love it that it is on Youtube for free. I applaud anyone who is getting the show out there. For those who go and download the bit torrent, more power to them. That's fine for those who want it that way. I personally prefer to have the quality I have on my DVD. I know for a FACT if I download the bit torrent that you have posted and then burn it myself that I will not have the quality I have now. BUT just to remind you, if you will recall, your free offer came after Cloudscapes offered to burn it for people who were having a hard time finding it. Most people were unable to find it, except the poorly done copies sold on ioffer... and I have no doubt they are making some profit-- but I don't begrudge them their bit of profit. At least people were able to get the show. There have been people on this list for YEARS looking for copies.

But as I stated before, Cloudscapes got tired of people contacting him and then not following through without so much as a thanks anyway. It's lousy and shows a great lack of consideration. Especially in a couple of cases where he had them prepared and the person simply never sent the check.

Oh and as a final caveat... Cloudscapes got his set from a fellow fan of the show, someone from on the IMDb comment board who generously offered to do so... and for the same price! I know he doesn't begrudge her one penny of the money that was spent. She has apparently quit doing so and most likely for the same reasons.

After having given this some thought (and with Cloudscapes permission to use his DVD burner!) I will make copies for those truly interested and for the same price. However, please don't contact me unless you really want them. You can reach me at [email protected].

For those who have posted asking for sets... I don't check the board often enough to keep track-- you'll need to contact me if you want a set. I am not trying to drum up business... just want to get the show to the fans! Oh and there are other options concerning packaging and price. Email me and I will tell you more!

It's fantastic to see so many people still interested in a show that had a "butterfly existence" on television. I hope that however it gets in the hands of fans that it's enjoyed and appreciated for what it was, a rare moment in television history. The creators and writers had a rare vision for this show and I think it's longevity is testimony to their vision.

And I have to say about Key West fans: They are a smart and thoughtful bunch. Each person I've sold a set to has been a pleasure to deal with! One fan of the show I made a set for even sent me a container of Key West cookies!!! Others send their thoughts about the show and what their impressions were. Just a bunch of really terrific people!!!
