Why do Americans introduce each other using their FULL names?

In this show, and others, I see Americans introducing people using their full names? Is this normal, or even practical?

"Hi, this is my father, Martin Crane, his therapist Daphne Moon ...and my brother Niles Crane"

Annoying and looonnnnnnnnng winded.

reply

But normal. We often introduce each other by full names. How you would address people once introduced would depend on the circumstances.

In a formal setting it would be, from your example, Mr. Crane, Dr. Moon and Mr. Crane. A Woman without a professional title would be Mrs./Miss/Ms depending on things. Other titles have come into vogue as well.

In a casual event it would be Martin, Daphne and Niles.

reply

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Seems like they always do it in this TV show.

reply

They do it a lot in this show because Frasier and Niles, in particular, like to appear erudite or formal, even in many casual situations.

(If you're trying to get a bead on Americans by watching Frasier, then you'll be way off.)

JackNorth- so true, much better to watch old episodes of The Honeymooners with Jackie Gleason. I've never met anyone with an apartment like Frasier Crane's. But my family did have an apartment similar to the Kramden home when I was a child! Just briefly though. And we HAD curtains.

reply

Not so common really. Don't look at this show for typical behavior.

reply

Why do you think its not common? I can't recall ever being introduced to someone without using their full (by that I mean given and family) name. And I've been around for a long time and been introduced to, and introduced, hundreds of people.

reply

Yes, it is incredibly common.

It's in both TV and movies. Not sure if they do that in European shows, but yes, I've noticed they always introduce themselves with their full name. Apparently it sounds more interesting than just saying "Hi, I'm Chris".
