This show seemed to glorify the idea of.....

having children growing up not knowing who their fathers were. Roz told that 20-year-old he didnt have to be involved in the upbringing of their child and he was like, great, and high-tailed it to his archeological dig elsewhere in the world. And then Alice was born and for the rest of the series Roz would proceed to have numerous relationships with men that never lasted because of how she was. Ha ha, that was all just so funny. If they had just had ONE episode where they actually ADDRESSED this issue, where Roz had a serious talk with Alice about how she DID know who her father was but that she had no idea where he was, well, that would have been something. But it never happened. I may sound like an old-fashioned prude here, but children have the right to know who their fathers are or were and if they are alive or not, so perhaps when they turn 18 then maybe they can try and locate them. That's just how I feel. I started thinking about this years ago, and I was like, why did they never officially address this issue? Because I wish they had. And then in the finale Roz becomes the new station manager of KACL but is no closer to being in a meaningful relationship with a man that she would want to marry. I always thought that was kind of depressing, to be honest. Oh well.

That's true. They probably never should have had Roz have a child. And how often in all those years did Frasier see his son?

reply

I always thought that if Roz had a "final guy", the biological father of her child would have been the best choice. Having him return several years older and wiser and still wanting to do the right thing like he did before, when he found out about the baby, might have made ideal closure there. She was the only one of the mains who was neither in a relationship, or implied to heading toward one in the finale.

Interesting idea.

I would have liked her with Donny, but without having ruined Donny.

I never gave it much thought, but you make valid points. Yes, it should have been addressed.

-In my mind, Christopher Reeve will always be Superman.-

That always bothered me big time. I understand the guy was young and in school so maybe it shouldn't have been a situation where they had joint custody, but he should have at least been involved. I never understood why she didn't want him involved at all, like having a father just wasn't important. I mean no disrespect to single mothers, but that's never what's ideal for a child. I am not saying they should have gotten married, but whenever possible, a child should have their father in their life.

reply

I never liked that character anyhow. I think they should have gotten a stronger character than her.

"I may sound like an old-fashioned prude here, but children have the right to know who their fathers are or were and if they are alive or not, so perhaps when they turn 18 then maybe they can try and locate them. That's just how I feel." You're not an old-fashioned prude. In fact, studies have borne out the fact that kids do better when there's both a mother and a father in an intact family. People don't want to believe that, but society has pretty much taken a nosedive since marriage and commitment became optional.

Roz was supposed to be there so all the women who couldn't find a decent man who'd commit to them could identify with her. Frazier would laugh about how the sign on her bedroom door should read, "NEXT!" but no one sat her down to explain that doing the revolving door routine hadn't gotten her any closer to that "Mr. Right" she was perpetually complaining about never finding.

One of my favorite scenes in Cheers was when Sam Malone looks around at the group psychology meeting of sex addicts and asked, "When did the rules change?" He'd grown up being told that getting as many notches on his bedpost as possible was the thing to do. Roz had the same mentality, but she never had that Come to Sanity moment that Malone did. I think in part because in our modern society the idea is that if men do it, they're hounds; if women do it, they're "liberated." Nifty double-standard, that.

What utter bull. If women do it, they’re “sluts”. If men do it, they’re players. It’s astounding how you can claim otherwise when we live in such a slut shaming world. The show constantly did this to Roz too. Women are even called sluts for how they dress or for even talking about sex. There are even sites called things like “slut hate”. What world do you live in?

reply

Sam grew up believing that getting as many notches on his bedpost as possible was a good thing. I guess you did, too. Sam had a wakeup call. Roz never did. Maybe you never did, either.

I live in normal world, where people get their HS diplomas, get married, then start having children, and do their best to try to stay together in a loving relationship. Yeah -- planet Mars stuff.

What the Hell are you even talking about? Absolutely none of what you just said relates to my point and all you did was make sly digs and insinuations. Truly pathetic.

KELSEY GRAMMER WAS PHOTOGRAPHED AT AN AIRPORT WITH A BINDER IN HIS HANDS.THE COVER OF THE BINDER HAD HIS PRODUCTION COMPANY'S INFO AND THE TITLE FRASIER.MAYBE THEY WILL RESOLVE THAT HICCUP FOR YOU.

Well, it was a silly TV show that really should have been finished after Niles and Daphne finally hooked up in 99. So, anything after the 7th season was hit and miss. I guess they felt the need to keep Roz's character the same for those one joke zingers by Niles and Frasier. Funny, I believe two the three producers(Casey, Lee) were gay and maybe that's why they focused on the gay actors in the show as the actors that portrayed Niles, Gil, Bulldog, and Martin were all gay in real life. Even Kelsey Grammer has said his own character is "somewhat gay", although the actor himself is not.
In short, there were a lot of single men in the show that were central characters. Heck, was anybody even married? KACL Station manager Kenny Daly?
Unfortunately Roz's character arc seemed to be mostly ignored. Daphe got a lot more attention. Funniest character on the whole show was by far Martin, RIP.
