Just out of curiosity I was wondering if anybody knew how many of Dick's relatives appeared on this show apart from Barry. I remember seeing a few of them in episodes but I don't remember ever seeing Jerry. Did Jerry appear on this show too and if he did was he related to him in it?
shareI just checked the full cast on the IMDB page and alot of Van Dyked have appeared on the show. So much so, I've lost count. I dunno, I think its kind of distasteful almost. It reminds me of that horrible movie, After Earth. Will Smith got his talentless son to star in it.
But I guess established actors sees showbiz like a family restaurant; you have a family member that needs work.......you let that family work at the restaurant.
I never knew until now that the two blonde haired children that were always on the show was Dick's grandchildren.
Thanks for replying. I didn't like 'After Earth' either and I liked a number of Will Smith's other movies but it was like they drained him of his personality in that one. I have heard of other actors having their family members appear in TV shows and I think Dick was just being nice to them. I knew the two blonde haired boys where Barry's sons and they obviously never went on to bigger things after this so he was might have been giving them a chance to see if they liked acting.
I know Dick Van Dyke has a daughter and she appeared in an episode as his daughter he rarely talked to but she never came back again.
I'm not sure how many appeared on the show, but to answer one of your questions, yes. jerry played marks brother Stacy in at least one episode. :)

Okay. Thanks for that. I had a feeling he might have been in one of the episodes because of all the other relatives Dick had appear in the show with him but I wasn't sure. I read somewhere they had a falling out with each other at one point and didn't talk to each other for a few years but I don't know if there was any truth to this.

shareIt starts with Dick's son Barry (playing the son of Dick's character)...from there, Barry's eldest sons, Carey and Shane, playing an assortment of roles (I believe Shane was the one who eventually became a semi-regular as Alex the Intern).Next in the order would be Dick's daughter Stacy (as his character's daughter...surprised?). Then, Barry's younger kids, son Wes and daughter Taryn, got into the act with a few appearances. Finally, brother Jerry made his presence felt, as Mark's brother Stacy Sloan, who was in the hospital for a serious sleepwalking problem. This was a sort of tribute to the Dick Van Dyke Show, as Jerry played Rob's brother Stacy Petrie, who also was.a sleepwalker, though they played it for laughs there.
It should also be noted that Dick's real-life girlfriend (wife?) Michelle Triola also appeared on the show in an episode. If her name sounds familiar, you may remember her as Lee Marvin's ex-wife, the one who sued him and won a huge palimony settlement.

It's interesting that Mary Tyler Moore never guest starred..or did she? Could have played a crazy ex named Laura. Perhaps she was asked and declined.
