You might be right about the BILLY IDOL angle but he was a minor star in Britain with GENERATION X then years later he was a star in America as a solo artist.

I think the star figure is more like Bolan or Bowie who both lost themselves for a while in America, another obvious inspiration is Johnny Rotten.

I liked the book but loved the tv series.

Book is great; some confusion over the timeline though. Seems to start with late Beatels eg Abbey Road, then goes on to punk and The Pretenders, while the events only seem to happen in a 2-year period or thereabouts. Not much sense of the passing of the seasons or passage of time to match the musical changearound.

It's only set during a four or five year period (between 74/75 and 79). The reason for the Beatles etc is that even as late as the mid-70s, the Beatles still had a heavy cultural presence over the music scene, even though they were no longer around as a band.

As Charlie exclaims when he has his epiphany in the punk club (presumably some time in 1976), "The sixties have been given notice tonight!"

Which is to say that the 1960s hangover that had permeated popular culture during the first part of the 1970s had, in his view, finally ended.

Make tea, not war.
