I don't recall the pilot episode. However, in most schools I'm familiar with, that would be a violation which, in itself, would merit punishment. Students are required to be paying attention to class. Not doing so, like listening to a game, would be breaking the rules.

shareWell, I do agree with Cory. My generation would rather watch a Schwarzenegger movie than to read or watch a play of Shakspear. I myself am like that. I would rather watch a Schwarzenegger movie than read or watch Shakspear. Or I would rather play a video game. I admit I do like some dramas like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Driving Miss Daisy, or Shawshank Redemption. I do like some books like The Howling by Gary Brandner, First Blood by David Morrell, Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary Wolfe, and Jurassic Park by Michael Chrichton.

shareAnd why do you think what you would "rather" listen too excuses you from paying attention in class? You are there to learn. Shakespeare is far more likely to still be around in 400 years than Schwarzenegger. (and I enjoy Schwarzenegger movies.)
When you are in class you job is to pay attention to the lesson and learn. It is not your job to decide you don't like that subject and listen to something else.
I wasn't saying he shouldn't be paying attention. Just that I get where he's coming from. I myself never enjoyed a lot of the books I had to read in school. I didn't like Fahrenheit 451, 1984, The Great Gatsby, Shakespeare's Hamlet, or The Jungle. I do like some older books though like Dracula, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, 20,000 leagues under the Sea, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (which pop culture ruined imo), King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and Frankenstein by Mary Shelly (though I prefer abridged versions cause Shelly's original version is just too descriptive for me).
