If Shawn is so poor, why...

Something I just realized but if Shawn is so poor, how is he able to eat at Chubby's all the time? I mean sure there were a few times where Corey shared his food with him more but more often than not, he had his own meal.

reply

well, maybe that is why he is so poor.

that is why so many people are so poor, they spend what they DO have on frivolous things like entertainment and poor food choices.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.

reply

Right right, because a child has everything to say about how poor their family is.

Yeah, his dating budget alone had to be putting Chet into the poor house!

I think that they were poor in the sense that they could't have new or fancy things, but I never got the sense that they were going without either. It was just that Chet's income was modest - when he wasn't out chasing Verna - so their lifestyle was not flashy.

Poor money management. I know a few people who believe eating out is cheaper than cooking at home.

Chubbie's is supposed to be pretty low-quality, probably the equivalent of McDonald's. Shawn's poor, but few are so poor they can't afford an occasional McDonald's cheeseburger. Homeless people eat at McDonald's. It's a very cheap option. I bet Chubbie's is much the same.

And, Never Gonna Spray Lettuce Again at least seems to imply he mooches off Cory.

It's not like Shawn had no money at all, it's just that Cory had it a lot better. Shawn's family was always falling apart and coming in and out of his life (but they always seemed to do their best for Shawn when they were around), while Cory had a stable family with pretty much no adversity. I'm certain that Chet at least had money to give to Shawn for eating at Chubbie's.

The show never stated or implied that Chubbies was expensive or luxurious. They probably had dollar menus.
