IMDB just made a stupid annoucement

to close the message boards on February 20, 2017.

Blooming stupid.

What to do after?

reply

Oh wow. ALL of the message boards?

My educated guess is that IMDB management got tired of all of the offensive/trollish posts and they don't want to dedicate the resources to moderate all of the forums.

reply

Yeah, I've seen some dedicated trolls in my time here (one guy used a script to flood the boards with the same message, others have created at least 2-dozen accounts just to character assassinate another poster), but I'd think they could find an alternative.

If certain areas such as the politics board (for a random example) are overly chaotic, shut them down and move on, why kill the entire system?

Why does imdb even HAVE a politics board?

reply

I'd be okay if they kept them under a subscription wall (like IMDb Pro)--though this recent move could be a play to get members willing to accept that as a "compromise".

If they were to do that, I suspect it would all but eliminate the troll problem--would people pay just to be able to troll?--and keep the boards to serious users who value them.

But I would expect a pay option to also lead to either a moderation system, an up/downvote system, or something.

Understanding is a three-edged sword.

If they were going to do that, it doesn't seem like there would be any need to have the current archives disappear first.
