Better Casting Needed

They should have gotten other actresses to play 5-year-old Queen and adult Queen. Although Raven and Halle are good actresses they just didn't look like they could pass for White.

Queen was only 1/4 Black. It would have been better to get a White actress with darker features than to try to use Black actresses. They looked too Black for the role. That little baby, the one being carried around during the wedding, was perfect. Using maybe Italian or Hispanic actresses would have been better. They would have passed for White a LOT sooner than Halle ever would.

reply

If they used an actress who wasn't black then people would have been pissed off. "Why you using a white person to play a black person?" Stuff like that. What made you think Queen was 1/4 black she mulatto with a little Indian in her! Both her mothers parents were black and her grandmother was part Indian. She was the right color. Look I' not a big Halle fan but still she looked the right color.

reply

you're right. the makeup people just slapped light colored face powder on halle and raven so to me they looked more ashy than anthing. they should've cast jennifer beals or kristen wilson, who are mixed but look white.

reply

Yeah Jennifer Beals would have been good.

I agree with what you said about what people would probably say. But still.

You're wrong about her ethnicity though. If you read the book, which the movie is based on, then you'd see that I'm right. They got it wrong in the movie. Or rather, they associated those characteristics with the wrong person. According to the book the ethnic makeup that they associated with her mother is actually her husband's, Alec Haley.

reply

Interesting. I've read Roots but not Queen yet because I haven't been able to find it as of yet but I'll check the library today. Thank god I go to an HBCU.

You all should check out the film Feast of All Saints! Halle was too dark to play queen--they were going to go with someone else until Ann Margaret came up with a solution from her own makeup! I too think Jennifer Beals would have been a better choice--Raven Simone was ok--but you really need someone who's Wentworth Miller's complexion and there ARE many actresses out there--look at Carly Simon!

reply

Halle was breaking out at that time and she was getting a name..' so they went with her..
Jennifer beals was too old at the time to have played the teenage halle!
but Berry did a fantastic job to me..

reply

Oh Good Lord. Halle is biracial regardless of whether she "looks" the part or not.

And for the record, not everyone of mixed race heritage ends up looking like the lighter or whiter parent.

Furthermore, there have been plenty of roles in which the actor or actress did not bear a physical resemblence but still embodied the character.

reply

Jennifer Beals would have been ok but imo she's not as good of an actress as Halle. I think your all being superficial saying a white looking black person
should have played Queen, that's a slap in the face to Halle.

reply

I Agree PrettD. Frankly I dont think the movie would have been the same without Halle she played the hell out of that part.

I honestly think she should have won an Oscar or Emmy for that role rather then Monsters Ball.

reply

Slap in the face to Halle? Sorry but Halle wasn't very good in this movie to begin with so, while Beals is a "meh" actor, I don't think she would've done much worse than Halle and would've been a better physical fit for the part.

reply

Thank you!

"Why thank you Ouiser...ain't nothin' like a good piece o' ass!"

reply

No, not every biracial person looks white. The point is, this movie was based on a book that stated that Queen looked white (and was sometimes mistaken for being white). Certain elements of the story (like Queen disclosing her race to try to avoid being raped) do not make sense when looking at Halle who is clearly biracial. The scene where the black vagrants throw food at Queen and call her a "white B----" doesn't really work either...any black person would recognize immediately that Halle Berry is mixed - they might call her "high yellow", but they wouldn't call her white. Queen's life story was heavily influenced by the fact that she looked white and Halle just doesn't.

reply

WatchAnythingOnce, I agree with you. I don't think some of the people who have responded understand your point.

We know that biracial people, like everyone else, come in a variety of hues, features, etc. However, as I watched parts of this movie it was hard for me to digest a lot of it because Halle Berry cannot pass for white.

I agree with whoever said that they should have chosen an actress who could pass for white. The fact that a person is biracial does not automatically mean that they can pass for white. For example, Lonette McGee cannot pass for white either. She was also miscast as Queen's friend who was passing. It just wasn't believable to me.

reply

I don't think that JB would have been good either. She looks Latino to me, not white. I remember having this conversation with a co-worker of mine when Queen came out. She also said that Halle wasn't a good choice. I thought that she did a good job. The only thing that I didn't agree with was her accent. She tends to use the same fake Southern accent every time she plays a Southern character. They all sound the same even though they come from different states. Also Raven was also popular at the time, so I wasn't surprised that she was cast as a young Queen.

reply

actually lonette in her younger days was a quintessential tragic mulatto have you not seen "sparkle" or "cotton club" OH SHE COULD PASS i think as they get older their complexion darkens idk

reply

I could see Lonette passing over Halle, but I guess some white people would be fooled, but Lonette does not look white to me, either. She looks biracial, like, she's mixed with black/indian or black/latino.

reply

Yeah for some reason people of color can clock other people of color. Like how Lonette's character clearly clocked that Queen was like her but some how a lot of people wouldn't be able to tell.

Halle Berry doesn't even look biracial to me. I was surprised to learn that she had a white mother. Halle looks like a black person with two black parents.

reply

i agree. i mean she is black and white both, and i think by having BLACK ACTRESS who is like HALLE skin was fine,i love it.Have it on again right now late night.and i m also thinking that RAVEN look as she did,a beautiful bi-racial pretty lil black girl
and i love the movie period,so i m goin back to watch the CAST WAS PERFECTO!i and i really luv easter and tim daly beautiful,

I'm so glad someone has said this! When I watched this movie, it just was beyond comprehension how other characters could mistake Queen for white. It was completely distracting and ruined the mini-series for me to some extent.

What a shame that because of political correctness, they had to cast a black actor, instead of an actor who actually looked the part.

reply

it wasn't political correctness it was the fatc to get people to watch you have to use knwon actorts that's the way the business is always done why you think Dream girls was basically an all star cast......but jenifer beals would have been great if se wasn't so old at the time maybe if thsi was made not to long after flash dance

You're an idiot!

Halle Berry is BIRACIAL; her mother is white. Geez...

reply

At first it bothered me that Halle didn't look white enough, but after awhile I liked her acting so much, I was happy to suspend my disbelief and just accept the premise that in real life she looked whiter.

If a casting director has to decide between someone who's a great actress but slightly wrong physically, and someone who physically fits the role but can't bring the same depth and emotion to it, maybe it's better to go with acting talent instead of physical traits.

To me this movie is memorable because of Halle Berry's performance. I can't forget it.

reply

I loved her in it too. And its not like a white person hasn't played a black person before.

reply

@decroissance: You made some very valid points. Her acting was so good until I just resigned to the fact that the real Queen was whiter looking and enjoyed the movie. The real Queen was 1/4 black meaning she was lighter than most mixed people.
I hear that Jennifer Beals would have been perfect but the thing is would she have been able to pull off what Halle Berry did? Halle Berry made this movie. She brought a lot of emotion into this movie and made the viewers feel this character's struggle. It was hard to keep a dry eye while watching this movie. Halle Berry did a phenomenal job bringing out this character despite the fact she does not meet the physical description. I do feel Haley was looking more at talent then actual physical description.

reply

I think Halle's makeup was enough to suggest Queen's lightness. Audiences can fill in the rest when the acting is excellent. I fully support this casting choice.

What I found hardest to swallow was Ann Margaret as the matriarch. She so often played on her looks when younger, I had a hard time accepting her in a role with more gravitas.

reply

If Queen were remade now I'd cast either Paula Patton or Rashida Jones in the role.

I just watched this and good as she was in the part, I just didnt buy Halle "passing" in the film.

In the case of Lonette McKee, I wonder if this was kind of the downfall in her career. Even though she was a good actress, she deserved so much more than to portray yet another damned 'tragic mulatto'. She seemed to have all bases covered on that subject since she seemed to get typecast in that role often on film.

"You win some, you lose some. But you live, you live to fight another day."

reply

I think it could also be down to the make up of the time. In Cloud Atlas Halle Berry's make up is much better and she does almost pass for a white lady so with today's make up you could still cast someone with her features.

Queen was described in the book as being meek and mousy and naive with big brown eyes and fair skin. I think Halle was all those things except fair.

Also the thing about Queen that people forget is that sometimes she passed and sometimes she didn't. There were a lot of characters who knew straight away that she was Mulatto. I think Paula and Rashida would be much better suited as Alice because it was made clear in both the book and the film that she really could pass.

reply

Rashida could possibly pass, but Paula looks biracial to me.
