"geronimo" is actually american eagle. It sails out of Newport.

reply

Geronimo is not American Eagle.

It was a different 12 metre which was completely repainted for the film. About a year ago it was for sale and at berth in Canada.

reply

The 12 meter that they were sailing in the beginning is down in Hilton Head Island, SC. It was a trial horse for the '87 cup and became one of the many "Stars and Stripes" boats that Dennis Conner had.

If you're really interested in learning more about the type of boats involved in the film and about yacht racing in general, do a search on google for "12 metres" and/or the America's Cup.

12 Metre is the class of yacht that was raced during the period that Wind takes place.

Many of the 12-meter boats used at the America's Cup in Perth, Australia are now down in St. Maarten's where the can be sailed on by tourists.

Some of the boats, particularly the Canadian 12-meter boats, were used for the movie.

The all of the 12 meter boats were actually America II. Radiance and Geronimo where repainted America II (US 46). Boomerang and Platypus were the sister ship of America II (US 44) repainted for the different races scenes. Both US 46, US 44, and a third boat US 42 were all called America II, but the boat that actually raced in Freemantle, Australia was US 46. Which ultimately lost to Dennis Conners and Stars and Strips (US 55) in the challenger rounds before Stars and Strips won the America's Cup.

As far as who owns the boats, I am not sure about US 42 though I believe it was renamed something else. US 44 is owned and operated by charter company in Lahaina, Hawaii. From the the few photos I have seen she does seem to have been heavily modified to accommodate tourists. US 46 Is owned by the America II syndicate which is part of the Manhattan Yacht Club in New York City. Which does offer charters, but also still races her in classic 12 meter races on the east coast. She is a pretty common sight in NYC harbor during the summer.
