underrated movie........

Everyone trashes this movie but is in an intriguingly mysterious film and I never could tell where it was going. It has solid performances and a great score by Thomas Newman. No, it's not porno and so some will be dissapointed but it is sexy and erotic but it's not oversold as a plot point. You get the point and it moves on from there. WHISPERS IN THE DARK-*** OUT OF 4.

I remember sneaking into this movie in the theater as a teen. I've always liked Jamey Sheridan's work but this movie just seemed to fizzle as it kept going. I liked the idea but I felt the execution was weak. I didn't buy Eve's delusional S & M relationship she had with Doug. Personally I thought his character was trash, he and Eve were obviously in a relationship and he cheats on her unknowingly with her therapist. It would have been better if Ann and Doug went their separate ways, I couldn't see what was salvable to make that relationship last. And Alan Alda as a killer was a laughable.

Very astute review. I liked this alittle better than you dis but your points are very well presented.

I'd say it's a bit under rated as well. It's no masterpiece for sure but it's quite enjoyable.

I checked out this movie last nite just for something to do.. and I laughed out loud when the culprit turned out to be a guy I have always wanted to see die with a hook stuck in his head. Too bad this wasn't one of those "twin brother psychopath" movies, then they could have used Phil Donahue and it could have killed two she-men with one stone! It was great seeing Jill Clayburgh get smashed! The Eve character was beautiful. I had never seen Barbara Unger before. She would make a good Marilyn Monroe. The other actors... John "Leg" - same old hispanic character, the lead female was pretty good. The boyfriend's charmes eluded me. He was a slug as far as I could see and the guy who played the lead's husband is the same guy who played that Baltimore mental institution ass hole in Silence of the Lambs. He's just pathetic. One thing that did hit me sideways was the fact that at the end of the film, after all the trauma this woman had endured, she was laughing and happy with the guy she used to think S&Med people to death and I, for one, still ain't sure of him. He looks guilty of something.

Hey, Shelbyville! I watched this last night because it was on my mind after we chatted about it. This film would probably break the old pulp-o-meter. It started out as a fairly respectable psychological thriller and turned into a sleazy "Basic Instinct"-style anything-goes titillation fest.

It did seem pretty implausible that the shrink would stick with the smooth-talking pilot, though I guess love is blind. I found it curious how many judgements she had about her patients, and even if Doug wasn't the killer, he was into S&M, right? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Ann seemed to have a huge problem with it.

Anyway, I didn't watch this for its psychological insight. I wanted to be entertained. Mission accomplished. 7/10 stars.

Yeah, reading my old post made me remember this film from beginning to end. I had remebered it as a hatchet. It was a danged hook. Oh man, didn't his little wife get smashed a good one with that bottle? I think Alan Alda ain't the nice even leveled out guy we think he is. I personally think that guy (in real life) carries a lot of rage. Just an impression I got.

Glad you were entertained. Wasn't that blonde chick hot? I wish I was that hot lookin. I used to be (sorta) but... the old age-o-meter caught up.

YEAH, BUT THEY BREAK WHEN YA FALL ON'EM

reply

Yes, Deborah Kara Unger is hot indeed, and a big-boned gal at that! Did you ever see her in David Cronenberg's "Crash" (not the touchy-feely Oscar-winner, but a creepy-feely film about car crash fetishists). Her character is even darker in that.

I don't know Alan from Adam, so he's neutral on my rage-o-meter. I do think he plays the goody-two-shoes and bit too often though, so it's nice to see the tables turn here.

reply

Yes, Cronenberg's "Crash" is superb.

I can't stand Alan Alda, people in Hollywood make such a big deal about him all he is another loud mouth liberal who gets real crazy when talking politics.

reply

Yeah, it sure is irritating how John Leguizamo invariably plays a Hispanic character. And why does a great actor like James Earl Jones always have to play black men?
