One joke I never got....

During the first ending, when the house burns down, and Wayne is holding Garth saying "Why, God? Why?". Is that a reference to another movie or something? Or was it just an exaggeration about how bad things turned out in the end?

It's not really a "joke". They're mocking cliched scenes in movies where one character dies and another looks at the sky and says something like "Why God?" or "Take me instead".
