Dick's Letter (contains spoiler)

Dick is portrayed as a simple-minded 'potato-head' who seems to have no understanding of sex - young Mary tells young Tom they couldn't 'do it' because Dick doesn't understand what to do - however, when Dick takes young Tom into the attic and makes Tom read the grandfather's letter to him, Dick has no trouble understanding the contents of the letter even though the contents are somewhat metaphoric in nature - I had trouble with this since it is a crucial plot turn - any one else have an opinion?

other than that I thought the film was excellent (even though I haven't read the book)

Mary told Tom that she and Dick tried, but couldn't "do it" because Dick's dick was too big.

If I remember correctly Tom told Dick the contents of the letter in simple terms, like Dad isn't your real Dad. Grandfather is your real dad. Or something similar. I suppose for dramatic effect Dick understands and gets real upset right away. When in actuality Tom would probably have to spell it out in more detail.

I haven't read the book, but I think Dick obviously couldn't read or write. Considering Tom's father is not Dick's real father, Dick probably was ignored or even mistreated by the family after his mother's death, which is why he wasn't got educated and why Tom's father felt guilty and shouted at him that he would try be his real father before his suicide.

IMO, obviously it is a ridiculous lie. Nothing could stop them to "do it" and Dick got much more potential to make her pregnant than Tom or Freddie(remember the swimming contest? What a metaphor!). Mary probably was not very sure, but she must know the likelihood. Though Mary was physically attracted by Dick, but she didn't want to marry him, so she lied to him that the father is Freddie(which is why Dick got so angry) and she lied to Tom to recover their relationship. Also that is explained why Mary wanted to have an abortion so firmly nd why Tom, probably having guessed the truth, didn't really try to stop her.

Dick knew he could not get Mary and his brother hated him, and the lettle made him totally despaired, so he chose to leave the family and probably killed himself.

How is this a ridiculous lie?? I think Mary told the truth.

keep in mind Mary was 16 and had only slept with another 16 year old before. and she was very tiny body-wise (lena headey tiny!)so she was probably very tight below...

I knew a girl in my freshman year of college who wasn't able to fit her boyfriend... she couldn't even us certain things when she was menstruating because of space issues.

It's very possible Dick was too big for her.

IMO, Lena Headey was not really a petite girl, have you actually watched the movie? She was 19 when she shot the film. I know there are some girls with the difficulties you mentioned, but that are rare situations. And keep in mind Mary got no difficulties in making love with Tom, a pretty big boy already. In the book, acutully she got two babies and one is Dick's(the first one I guess). So it should be a lie, I hope someone could get a clue in the book, I didn't have one currently.

Lena Headey was 17 when she shot the film.
There are mixed up years all over the internet over when she was born.

Tom wasn't a fully developed man though, remember he was only 16. And men continue to grow up into their twenties.

All genitalia aside, Dick was larger as a man in general in comparison to Tom. So... it's likely that what would have worked with tom and mary wouldn't necessarily worked for dick and mary.

Yes, it is possible. But the movie really gave me an impression that Mary seduced Dick, not because she was compassionate for him, but because she was an innocent "slut", which means that she was too young to control her behaviors and realize the consequences. So her feeling pity for Dick is just an excuse or even a lie in my opinion.

Lena Headey's performance in this film is excellent, I could like to watch her other movies if I get chances. David Morrissey's performance is also good, it is interesting that he also acted as the guy who seduced his sister-in-law, Du Pre, in another love triangle of "Jackie and Hilary".

If you liked her in this, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend "Aberdeen", if you can get your hands on it.

In the film both Mary and Tom are only 16 and both actors were likely 17-19 respectively when they played the characters. Also Mary said Dick was twice as big as Tom.
