Over Looked ...

Saw this movie quite awhile ago when I was younger and was pulled into its drama. Just watched it again many years later and the effect is the same. Sad there are no messages on this board to talk about this great movie. Definetly Snipes shows that he is a under used talent trapped in action movies.

I agree. "The Waterdance" is an exceptional movie, a very funny, touching and simply wonderful drama about the plight of the handicapped. Eric Stoltz, William Forsythe, Helen Hunt and especially Wesley Snipes are all outstanding in this movie. What I love about this film is its stubborn refusal to neither sanitize nor sentimentalize the severity of being disabled, specifically addressing with disarming candor and matter-of-factness how these men's lives have been irrevocably changed by their limited physical condition. The film's raw, earthy humor in particular was a pleasant surprise, making this picture both amusing and affecting in equal measure. I too wish there were more posts for this extraordinary gem of a drama.

I seen this movie on Bravo Sundance or IFC back in 97 so it had been out for awhile. The men in this movie put in the best acting performances of each of their careers. Eric Stoltz: The brooding *beep* who hates the fact he's a parapalegic now and wanting to marry an already married woman(Three Words: HELEN HUNT NUDE nuff said) Wesley Sniples (in probably his GREATEST performance on screen) The womanizing lieing(or so they think) catalyst to John Forsyth's character. The badass biker who was "rundown" by a rich guy in a jaguar and wants to sue the pants off of him and who is VERY racist. One of my favorite scenes is when the young Oriental kid wants to go out with the older guys to see the stripper that Wesley Snipes supposedly knows. John Forsyth as racist as his character is, keeps looking out for the kid and telling him no, yer mother will never forgive me if anything happens to you. The next cut scene is the kid in the back of the van all smiles. One of my all time favorite scenes in my opinion. I will always give this movie a 10 because of all the actors in the movie putting on SUPERB performances of their careers.

I agree. Haven't seen it recently but saw it a long time ago on TV. One of those films that really touched me that's no one's really heard of.

Yes, great movie! All the actors are great in it. I agree that Snipes should do some drama instead of all that action crap. I would love to own it but I canĀ“t find it on dvd here in Denmark...

I have nothing more to add except Bravo! and beautifully said, Woodyanders. I love this film too and that is exactly the way I feel about it. The Waterdance is an overlooked modern classic.

I like how this film is honest, sensitive but also funny in places, and how it doesn't walk on eggshells around the subject of disability. One of the very few other disability-themed films I felt the same way about was Inside I'm Dancing, which stars James McAvoy and Romola Garai.

I agree with all of the above comments. This was an excellent film. It was pretty heavy but of all the movies I have seen portraying the effects of disability, this seemed the most realistic and honest. I would recommend it to anyone....too bad it is in fact very overlooked.

It may be overlooked, and underappreciated, yet I can't get enough copies of this modern classic to stock!! I sell Out of Print DVD's on Amazon and that DVD is a tremendous seller for me, as a matter of fact I just sold another copy this evening. So although it may have been overlooked, with me selling and with little success trying to restock as such, this little Indie might contain more staying power then most big budget flops. By the way, although the posts for this movie seem to be few and far between, they certainly are genuine and heartfelt, and very appreciated by this movie fan. God Bless All!!

I like it because we get to see Helen's tits! LOL

I haven't seen this film for ages but I remember really enjoying it; mainly the camaraderie between the three main guys, Stoltz, Snipers and Forsythe, each of whom are very flawed. I like the part when Stoltz's character reveals to the racist, Forsythe, that his surname is 'Garcia' after the latter had been trying to build up some type of Aryan solidarity against Snipes.

And as others have noted, this demonstrates how great an actor Snipes can be, as did 'Jungle Fever' and 'New Jack City'. Now that he's been released from prison I hope Snipes starts acting again, and I don't mean appearing in more action films like 'The Expendables 3' (and judging by its paltry box-office it doesn't look like there will be a '4').
