How well do they deliver the lines in french?

According to the trivia section neither Matti Pellonpää or Kari Väänänen could speak french in real life. I don´t speak french, but thought they pronounced it quite well. How does their language strike a frenchman?

reply

They both delivers their lines in french as somebody who's still learning the language. Anyway it really works in the film, since their characters are supposedly immigrants. Rodolfo (Pellonpää) is Albanian and Schaunard (Väänänen) is an irishman.
Another wonderful film by Kaurismäki.

In terms of rhythm & emphasis, it pretty much sounds like French spoken as if it were Finnish.
