Was this movie initially meant to be a sequel to another?

I recall reading someplace that US was initially conceived as the sequel to another film, but ended up being developed as a stand-alone project in it's own right, but can't recall what the orignal movie was supposed to be.. Does this ring a bell for anyone else?
