Simple question, simple answer. I hope.

How about "Genetically Revived"? Sounds like that works.

Since first time around they'd be a GI (Government Issue), it probably stands for Government Reissue..

reply

Just a correction: GI as far as soldiers go means General Infantry.

reply

"They were called GR + serial number in honor of General Reynolds (as you see in the movie made for TV "Universal Soldier III: Brother in arms") the man who had the idea of the project UniSol"

First, Brother in Arms is titled as Universal Soldier 2, Universal Soldier 3 is titled Unfinished Business. Second, I wouldn't trust that info because the people on that film had nothing to do with the very first one, so they could of put that in there as their own touch, but the makers of this film could of had a different vision of GR all together.

Erm, no. It does stand for Government Issue.

reply

No ... almost ... its original meaning = Galvanized Iron (I did a Yahoo search). And according to YAHOO the term GI is generally applied too a member of the Armed Forces or an item of their equipment (not necessarily a soldier). The other incorrect term is the one you're referring too ... General Infantry.

reply

You clown, everybody knows GI is General Infantry. Goverment Issue? What the hell is that?!

Actually, if you take a look at Wikipedia (the source of all truth): "GI or G.I. is a term describing a US soldier or an item of their equipment. The term is often thought to be an initialism of "Government Issue" but the origin of the term is in fact "Galvanized Iron" after the letters "GI" that was stamped on US Army metal trash cans made from it.[1][2] It was later assumed that GI stood for Government Issue and the term was applied to other equipment and the soldiers themselves. Alternative interpretations include General Infantry, Ground Infantry, General Invasion, Government Inductee." From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GI_%28term%29

Just the tip, just for a second, just to see how it feels

They were called GR + serial number in honor of General Reynolds (as you see in the movie made for TV "Universal Soldier III: Brother in arms") the man who had the idea of the project UniSol

when real soldiers are called GI i think it does mean government issue, but this is not a formal title. the formal use for 'government issue' is when labeling weapons and equipment that were given to the soldeirs and it eventually became a 'nickname' for the soldiers themselves. i realise that the expression general infantry does make a lot more sense, and i would be interested to know for sure what all the correct terminology is. i dont mean to argue or offend anyone, but this is what i found through research.

any further clarity wouldnt go astray, cheers.

reply

ps: maybe general infantry is the name of the division that the soldiers served in. i dont know much about the army of the right words to use, but you know how there are like marines/seal/special forces/etc. so maybe thats it. 'general infantry' is the collective term for a group of soldiers, and 'government issue' is like a singular nickname/title.

still...i am not certain of anything.

Your all wrong about GI, but GR does stand for General R

um, that didnt explain *beep* about what gi stands for.

reply

I remember reading the "Universal Soldier" book by Robert Tine, and it explains what "GR" means but I don't remember. I'll post it up as soon as I find it in the book because it is the correct translation of the abbreviation of "GR"

reply

It stands for Graves Registration. Doesn't make sense but that's what I read when I looked through the novel.

reply

The most common and well known use for G.I. does stand for Govt Issue...take it from someone who is.

reply
