Question about the tech guy with the grenade

Ok this is probably a silly/pointless/stupid question...I've watched this movie maybe a dozen times, but haven't seen it in years, but one thing I always wondered. At the part where the tech/doctor says that Scott has issued an order, to hold the grenade for 30 seconds then drop it, did the doc want to blow himself up with the remaining unisols, or did he want to make a run for it after handing over the grenade? I always assumed that he thought he was going to die anyway so wanted to try and take unisols out before he did, but when he puts the grenade in the unisols hand (Gr-24 or whatever) he looks like he's struggling or the unisol is holding on to him, with kind of a panicked expression like he wanted to run away. But it was probably an expression of 'oh *beep* I'm about to explode'.

It's been forever since i saw it so what do you guys think?

He wanted to destroy the unisol, he wanted to run, but then the unisol held the grenade and his hand, he couldn't escape that's why he looks scared, he didn't want to die.

That's it exactly. And it didn't occur to him to say Um, Sergeant Scott orders you to let go of my hand.
