Was this the last great Western??

I say yes.

reply

It may well be. It's a long time ago but I when try searching through IMDb all I see are many many films I've never heard of. There are a few good westerns: Appaloosa, Blackthorn, Outlaws and Angels, but I can't think of a great one. I guess when you think of it great westerns require great western stars and maybe Clint is the last of those - for now.

Bone Tomahawk?

YOU NAILED IT...I WAS THINKING THAT AS I WAS SCROLLING AND READING.

reply

Pretty recent and damned good. Probably better then The Unforgiven from what I remember. Definitely not one of my top Clint Westerns.

reply

How about Hostiles?

reply

THAT WAS A REAL GOOD MOVIE.

I love westerns. Westerns are my favorite genre. I have seen so many westerns it's hard to come up with a favorite, but this movie is nowhere near the top for me. I saw it once when it came out and was unimpressed and never bothered to watch it again. It was the worst of the Western mini-boom of the early 1990s that included Dances With Wolves, Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill and Geronimo: an American Legend, all of which, except for Wild Bill, were much better Westerns.

Maybe this is a Western for people who don't really like Westerns?

reply

I love Westerns (my favorite genre of film) and I love Unforgiven, so maybe not?

reply

How would you place it next to Eastwood's other "Revenger Comes to Town" films, ie. High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider? I'd rate it equal or slightly higher than Pale Rider and far below High Plains Drifter. I guess you could also include Hang 'Em High and Joe Kidd in this list which both exceed Unforgiven as far as I am concerned.

reply

I think Unforgiven is Clint Eastwood's best Western that he directed and starred in, with The Outlaw Josey Wales in second place. I think Joe Kidd is a weak film, which is a shame because it was directed by the great John Sturges. High Plains Drifter is superb, perhaps his #3 best. Hang 'm High is pretty good. The best Western he ever starred in, though, is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, one of the greatest films ever made. As for Pale Rider, I've only seen bits and pieces of it on TV from time to time, never all the way through. I should rectify that.

Here's my personal top ten favorite Westerns:

1. High Noon
2. Shane
3. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
4. Ride The High Country
5. The Wild Bunch
6. The Magnificent Seven
7. Seven Men From Now
8. Open Range
9. Red River
10. Unforgiven

reply

Of course not.
Unless you mean by the last-until-the-next great Western.
Westerns will always have a place in our imaginations.

reply

I can't think of a great western since this one, some good ones like 3:10 to Yuma but man, it's impossible to beat Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman.

reply

Hard to disagree with that.

Throw in Gene Hackman and what the hell...

reply

3:10 to Yuma in 2006, although that film is a remake.

Hell or High Water (2016) is kind of a Western film

reply

I think it comes close. True grit and 310 to Yuma do not count, in my opinion, because they are remakes. The Revenant is the only movie I can think of to challenge that. However it is not as good as Unforgiven.

reply

I think Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma, and True Grit might also be pretty great.

Not quite as good as Unforgiven though.
