The Signifying Cueball

Unquestionably, no character from 1992's classic 80s action movie Under Siege left a bigger impact on us than the unforgettable Cueball. Long after the much-loved spectacle of the knife ballet and the arresting image of the bouillabaisse that symbolizes man's inhumanity to French cuisine have faded from our memories, the heralded entrance of Cueball, followed by his subsequent taunting gyrations in the hell's kitchen of Chief Ryback's damnation, remains with us for a lifetime. Having since embedded itself firmly into cinematic discourse after becoming the subject of several film studies theses, the permeating effect of Cueball's hypnotic dance upon the unfolding of the impending narrative holds up a mirror to the contrasting portrayal of his 'funky g' companion who, attired in ethereal White, shadows his every move throughout the mesmerizing sequence, while Cueball, as mentor-antagonist, is tellingly depicted in a diabolical shade of red, which foreshadows the appearance of the inciting bouillabaisse. It is only with his critical appearance at the denoument of the film, however, whilst uttering the most oft-quoted line of dialogue from the cinema of that decade,"Show us your move, Case" that the true nature of Cueball's minstrel act cameo is revealed as a stultifying statement about the moral invective of the military-industrial complex's collusion with, and resulting in, Stockholm Syndrome's residual traces on Post Traumatic Seagal Disorder.

You sir, should get a Pulitzer for descibing the brief but oh so important Crew member: Cueball in such an eloquent way.

Also, let us never forget his incredible dancing ability and the immortal chant that led him to bust out his moves in the first place...."Go cueball, Go cueball, Go!"

Cueball....The man, the legend, the dancer in the galley.
