I didn't think this was a compelling film

A lot of critics raved about this film but I thought it was just mediocre.

I personally thought it was insanely good.

Same here. This is the ne plus ultra of French filmmaking, and for my money the film is surpassed in all of cinema only by the Lumet/Chayefsky masterpiece Network.

While it would certainly bore most mainstream audiences, to enjoy this one you do not have to engage it on a purely intellectual level. It is not an experimental art film. (To summarise its plot, in fact, would make it sound almost like a soap opera.)

What it is, is an exhibit of narrative cinema at its apex.
