I think you've got all the events. Desmond we don't see again, and the ring we don't see outside of the dreamplace until the last scenes in the railroad car --assuming that those are not dream representations either.

I suspect that their paths, Desmond's and the ring's, diverged soon after that disappearance scene, but it's just a guess.

I can only presume he was summoned to the Black Lodge. His car had "Let's Rock" painted on the windshield which is the first line the Man from Another Place says during Cooper's dream. As for why he never appears again, I don't know. I think perhaps his investigative approach wasn't conducive to helping the metaphysical aid of Laura Palmer later. He had a harder edge than Cooper; he had far less patience than Cooper. I think Lynch went out of his way to show just how much we shouldn't like him like the scene in Irene's diner where he made Sam Stanley spill his coffee.

This was also supposed to be setting up further sequels which unfortunately and obviously, given the film's critical and box office failure, were never made. Philipp Jeffries' and Cooper's stories would have continued as well. We may even have gotten to find out more about Judy (my pet theory is that she would have been Bob's next target, played by Sheryl Lee as a redhead, but in truth Lynch and Engels probably had nothing planned yet).
