I don't think there's anything "duplicitous" about it; the movie knows exactly what it is. The user who mentioned Southern Comfort and Deliverance is pretty much right on the money. You could even go one further and evoke old Hollywood westerns; a genre that Hill is clearly influenced by.
This is a "cowboys and Indians" movie where both sides are equally corrupt, violent and motivated by greed. The heroes are really no less righteous than the villains; they're driven by the pursuit of wealth and don't mind hurting whoever gets in the way of it.
As with Hill's Southern Comfort, Trespass is a movie about ignorant characters invading a world they don't understand, and thinking themselves superior enough to disregard the unspoken laws that keep that society in check.
