Dopey and improbable, but a lovable guilty pleasure

It's like two movies in one, that go together like fingernails on a blackboard. But, because of the first rate actors, it kind of grows on you.

It's the same thing with Walter Hill's SOUTHERN COMFORT. Rediculous, but the solid cast makes you believe it somehow.

Trespass is an asinine film, but even more galling is how duplicitous it is. It's aimed both at black audiences for gangsta-rap imagery and at white urban anxieties. It displays a fascination with black culture, coupled with the desire to keep it at arm's length. The crude message? "Don't mix with these guys". No Lethal Weapon interracial buddy-bonding here.

Hmmm... pretty severe, there banquet!

Yup... there's a bit of pandering there, with some stunt casting of Ice-T and Ice Cube.
But the atmosphere is well-done, and the well-modulated tension escalates throughout.
The ending shows how destructive greed can be.

I don't think there's anything "duplicitous" about it; the movie knows exactly what it is. The user who mentioned Southern Comfort and Deliverance is pretty much right on the money. You could even go one further and evoke old Hollywood westerns; a genre that Hill is clearly influenced by.

This is a "cowboys and Indians" movie where both sides are equally corrupt, violent and motivated by greed. The heroes are really no less righteous than the villains; they're driven by the pursuit of wealth and don't mind hurting whoever gets in the way of it.

As with Hill's Southern Comfort, Trespass is a movie about ignorant characters invading a world they don't understand, and thinking themselves superior enough to disregard the unspoken laws that keep that society in check.

I agree with the originator, this movie reminds me very much of `Southern Comfort' and also `Deliverance'.

The ethnic imagery gives me no problems at all. We don't need a government health warning about the effects of racial prejudice. There are good and bad black and white people. This movie depicts a conflict between the average of one and the worst of the other, that's all. What then; should we pretend it doesn't happen for fear of upsetting the politically-correct applecart? The USA has just elected its first black president. There's no reason to suppose that he will be less honourable than any white president who has gone before. But there are still black gangs out there who'd kill you for a nickel.

Check-out the ethnic percentages of those who commit gun crime in Britain today. Don't mention it though; you'll be a racist.

Don't mention how gun crime continues to escalate in Britain, Australia, etc despite ever-stricter (ludicrously strict) gun laws - you'll be labeled a "gun nut" and those, according to the liberals, are fair game for any sort of slander.
