Filming Location - factory

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the abandoned factory used in the movie? Kinda seems like the whole thing was shot on location and not a built set.

The story was set in East St. Louis, but in fact the factory was TWO buildings...the exteriors where Ice T and Ice Cube arrived and the stairwell entry areas were located at a building in Memphis and the interiors where the Paxton and Sadler were holed up was an abandoned building in Atlanta, GA. The two locations were tied together on film with a vestibule that was built by the art department and erected in both locations to provide an "airlock", so to speak, between the filming in both cities. The Memphis portion was shot first and then the production company moved to Atlanta. There was additional photography in Los Angeles where the vestibule was resurrected on one more occasion. I worked on the film and know all this to be factual.

Awesome! Thanks for posting that!

This has baffled me since I saw this movie in the 6th grade. I explore abandoned buildings and stuff.

It really doesn't look like two buildings at all. ALL the exteriors were in Memphis? I wonder if these two locations still exist.

I was gonna say, I live in STL and I've never seen any of those buildings.

If I poked you in the belly, would you go HOOHOO?

How big is Seattle?

I live in a tiny little town in Northern England and there's things here I've never seen!

I imagine Seattle is huge, but then everything in the U.S. tends to be huge.

Are you saying this guy is lying?

I'm not trying to discredit anyone. I loved this film and it just seemed like a good question and an interesting answer.

So, can you give us any more info?

And, btw, if you poked me in the belly I'd probably be sick on your hand

:o)

He meant St. Louis, not Seattle. But, to answer your question, both are big enough that no one could ever recognize every building.

I was raised in Memphis, TN and I can tell you what the building is. The old International Harvester plant where they made tractors and other farm equipment. It was closed down in the 80's. Also, another bit of trivia, the interior shots of the law firm where Tom Cruise worked in the firm were shot there. They built a nice sound stage there. After that, the building was sold to a panty hose manufacturer. The building still stands. It is located less than a mile from the Mississippi River in an area of Memphis known as Frayser.

Amazing stuff!

Is it still an active location? If they had to make the property a little more "rustic" for the filming of this movie they did a pretty good job, all the abandoned cars and junk looked authentic.

I am from Memphis too, and never knew it was shot there. Before The Firm, movies were not filmed a lot in Memphis, but after that it seemed to increase movies by a ton. Either that or I paid attention closer. I love Memphis, and I love this movie....I may have to go to Frayser and check it out!
