Had it been directed by Carpenter it would have been a hit

This was such a cult-film material, I wish John Carpenter directed it, cause it had a simple story line reminiscent of Assault on Precinct 13.

Hill is every bit Carpenter's equal as far as "cult genre filmmakers" go.

Hill's flair for action elevated this to a fun, pulpy, stylish B-movie that Carpenter could not have improved on.

Besides, we already got, as you mentioned, Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. Why would you want to see him retread familiar territory?

I fink Walter Hill is a better wrtier too.

I have never seen Assault on Precinct 13, but know the general storyline so I can see why you think this is similar. I also agree if Carpenter did this, it probably could have been more successful.

That being said, I still think it is a pretty damn entertaining movie. It's a blast. The paranoia, tension, somewhat unlikeable characters (though I liked the old bum and Paxton's character).

I love Carpenter and think he is one of the best American directors but Walter Hill did a really good job with "Trespass", it was up to Carpenter standards in my opinion. Carpenter would more likely focus much more on the good guys then the bad guys as Carpenter does not focus as much on the bad guys in his movies.

That's kind of how I feel about it. I love Carpenter too, and think he might even have made a good version of this, but this movie is awesome.

Carpenter made a handful of decent movies, but only THE THING is remotely comparable to Hill's best movies. Heck, even Hill's mediocre movies (ANOTHER 48 HRS, anyone?) are superior to most of Carpenter's movies. And although TRESPASS had a "simple story line," it's what Hill and the characters do with it that makes it a masterpiece. These aren't cartoon characters like you get in most Carpenter movies. These are real, living, breathing human beings who don't always act in the ways you'd want or expect them to. There's a mind behind each of the faces. How many action movies can you say that about?

Not sure It Will have Been Good. I like Carpenter but It may end A Not very good result here.

These type of films never seem to be hits but pick up a big cult fandom. Trespass, Judgment Night, Assault On Precinct 13 (original & remake), even Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China & The Thing all failed at the box office but most became much loved films over time. Both Hill & Carpenter are very talented but I really doubt switching them over would've changed much except the style of the direction. I wouldn't change it for the world, I love it just the way it is.
