This was a very good movie but I think the ending could of been a lot bette.

The ending wasn't perfect, but the rest of the film is so strong that I cut it some slack.

I liked the ending. You can't let the gangsters get the gold because they were the bad-guys. You also couldn't let the firemen get it because they entered the building out of greed. The vagrant, on the other hand, wasn't pure evil, like the gangsters; and he didn't get himself into this situation out of avarice, as the firemen did.

Hence, having the vagrant walk with the gold helps convey the movie's lesson that wickedness doesn't pay.

It makes sense that the unassuming morally neutral, homeless man would end up with the gold. It was consistant for Paxton's naive (but most moral) character to be convinced to take off without obsessing over the gold as he was the one character who expressed a willingness multiple times to forgo the gold to get out alive.
