Not perfect but massively underated

I saw this movie for the first time since I was a kid and I was blown away even more as a 29 year old than I was as a 9 year old. The whole movie is like being in a fantastic whacky dream. Watching it as an adult I am amazed it flopped.

The sets and scenery is otherworldly yet totally believable, and its genuinely funny too.

Also the military insight in this movie is brilliant, whoever wrote it had more of an interest in military tactics than toys. The entire movie is an ode to attention to detail and the icing on cake is the brilliant forward thinking in offensive weapons.

Every time a risky movie flops, we get more run of the mill rubbish action movies (the expendables, fast and furious etc)

The scene where they produce an MTV video spoof and trick the guards by making a fake wall was completely reproduced in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol.

It was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Now that more than 20 years have passed, it has reached that nostalgia stage when even its flaws are forgiveable. It's simply amazing.

I agree with u I've always loved and cherished this film I was 11 or 12 when it came out and I knew nothing about it except it was the only non R rated playing ie only parent approved film, but I loved it then and cherish it now. I hope it gets a Blu Ray or does anyone know if it already is? Thanx

It is zany amusing and visually stunning.

The opening sequence is beautiful and memorable. I don't think it's a great film but for reasons I can't explain it just sticks with me and is something I feel like re-visiting every now and then.

I watched it after Robin's demise so I have no nostalgic feeling for the movie but it's one of my favourite movies. The music, scenery and sets are wonderful.

I don't think it's underrated at all. Visually, the movie is brilliant, but the story is so muddled and confused that I'm not sure what it's really about. It starts off with a few interesting themes, begins to lose its way in the second act, then seems to collapse under its own weight in the third act. And then the movie just sort of ends, like the filmmakers couldn't figure out what else to do, so they just shrugged their shoulders and rolled the credits.

I would describe this as a movie with a lot of wasted potential, which is a bit surprising when you consider how long Barry Levinson dreamed of making it.

With all due respect, I'm not sure how you can't follow the plot - it's actually pretty basic. In fact I would've thought some of the detractors would say it's too simplistic.
