Why Do People Like This Movie?

Of course most people watch because of the Female leads. But other than the Sexy three. What the hell is all the fuss about. I love HK films. But this one ranks at the bottom. Terrible movie. Maggie Cheung was completely wasted in this film. What ashame Cheung is one of the most under rated actress in the world. Anthony Wong who is also a great actor was wasted as well. There are worst HK films than this. But this is the most disappointing one.

I tend to agree; this is a pretty bad movie. But hey, I just found out that Anita Mui died, so I'm pretty bummed out. Sad news to cap off an already personally crappy day.

I forgot to mention the one bright spot about this movie. Anita was by far the best thing about this. I still have a hard time excepting the fact that she is gone.

Those were the bits I liked. Agree she didn't get to do a hell of a lot, but her effortless charisma and comic ability shone through as usual. She's so wonderful. God, I'm coming over all wistful...

The film's main appeal certainly comes from the three lovely stars as you said, but really it's just good corny fun (with some brilliant costume design). Not the best HK actioner ever, but far from the worst. Anyone seen the sequel?

I know I can't change you oppinions but the reason I like it is the superhero fight scenes, the (over)acting of it's stars, the cheesy and the incredibly stupid plot (The first set peice involves an invisible woman and 2 babies flying around a building). I think the direction is smart and the cinematogrphy enhances the action scenes. I truly think it is an A+ be movie and it features a gfun preformance from the great Anita Mui.

'The Heroic Trio'(1992) a.k.a. 'Dong Fang San Xia' is solid, guilty pleasure! This film does have its flaws and it's not everyone's bag. Some of its flaws: Lack of a cohesive plot, rough production values, , occasional over-the-top acting, liberal amounts of, and at times gratuitous, ultraviolence, etc. Some of its virtues: The charisma of its three gorgeous leading ladies, Tony Ching Siu Tung's zesty wire driven choreography, Johnny To's direction, Sandy Shaw's original script, fine performances from the cast, especially the underrated Paul Chun Pui, etc. I first saw this film on TV(it was dubbed into Mandarin, I think, with Chinese and English subtitles. Maggie Cheung's looper almost sounded like Fran Drescher). 'The Heroic Trio' is far more fun and entertaining than the depressing, yet watchable, sequel, 'Executioners'.

P.S.: The Miramax version is a weak shell of the its native HK counterpart.
Stick with the original if you want to see Anthony Wong eat his severed finger, and other excessive scenes. Gam hou sihk la! That's good eatin'!

I remember first seeing this on cable late on Friday night when some buddies of mine were just hanging out. I don't know what it was (eye candy factor aside), but there was just something about the film that grabbed us. Kind of a blend of Hong Kong action film and comic book adventure. Yeah, it's guilty pleasure, but then isn't CHARLIE'S ANGELS (original and big screen versions?) Was very surprised to find a letterboxed DVD copy of this a while back. Have only seen the Miramax version, but would like to see the longer Hong Kong cut. (Has anyone seen the sequel?)

The 'Heroic Trio' sequel, 'Executioners'(1993), is very dark and downbeat, but it's still watchable. A nuclear explosion has contaminated most of the drinking water(in Southeast Asia? The film doesn't specify.) , leaving factions to fight over the available resources. Mr. Kim(Anthony Wong) wants to use the disaster to take over the world(?). As one could guess, the film has its share of plot holes. The 'Heroic Trio' reunite to find a fresh water source.
Finding 'Executioners' in its original integrity will be a challenge since Miramax is sitting on the US distribution rights. They've gained a bad reputation for putting HK films(among others) through their cinematic "chopshop". Good luck, celluloid "si hing"("brother").

Some friends of mine came over one time, and one of them had a copy of this movie, (he rented it). We all sat back and watched it, after it was over, me and all the other guys wanted to beat up the guy who brought the tape. We all agreed that the movie was ABSOLUTELY terrible, whoever likes this movie has bad taste.

This movie was so bad I was tempted to smash my head against the wall in hopes that I could jar the images of the film out of my memory. Especially the scene where all those kids start peeing while being blown up, that scene still disturbs me to this day. Also the cannibal scene, and the scene with the demon decapitating people. Damn, this movie had a lot of bad scenes.

Anyhoo, the movie SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The scene where Ah Gau/Number 9(Anthony Wong Chau-sang)decapitates his hostages with a "blood dripper" is an homage to the Shaw Brothers film, 'The Flying Guillotine'(197?), its sequels, rip-offs, among others. I personally, like 'The Heroic Trio', but a film like this is bound to have its detractors. My sister kept saying "Ewwwwwwwww!" every time a visceral, blood-soaked scene popped up.

Oh, you're being terribly harsh. It's a fun little cartoon!

It captured my imagination! Okay to put it into perspective I actually saw it at a theater in Berkeley, CA a few years after it came out. At that time there were not many superhero films out and the few that were seemed a bit on the bland side compared to the wild scenes I saw in this one. I also liked the three main characters and the actresses that played them. I still cannot believe Anita Mui has passed on, she was so young. Looking at it recently the film is a bit rough in many places, but heck I still enjoyed it. At the time I had just gotten into HK type films so it was fun to start to watch these type of films. You know there was another film I saw with this one, I think a Jackie Chan one and while it was also fun The HEROIC TRIO made more of an impression with me. If I saw this film now would I still have the same feeling about it? Who knows I still think I would enjoy it. As for some of you thinking it is the worst film of all time. I say to each his own. BATMAN AND ROBIN to me was a worst film of this type of genre.

'The Heroic Trio' has a scene with Michelle Yeoh wearing a form fitting "invisiblity suit". It looks good hugging her nice, athletic physique.

Michelle, you're our belle!

Also, there's a scene where Ah Tung saves a little girl and her kitten when they accidentally fall from a balcony! It's like that scene in 'Superman' where he saves Lois from falling to her death from a banged up helicopter hanging from the Daily Planet tower. It brings a smile to my face every time I see it!
