Disappoinment

I really wanted to like this film. It had all of my favorite elements: Michelle Yeoh, female superheroes, martial arts, and women in spandex. However I was deeply disappointed by the amateurish production, badly staged fight scenes, incoherent storyline, and bad editing. And what was up with all the unconcealed wires???? Geez......this film was produced in 92 I believe.

The only saving grace was the cinematography. There were some beautiful scenes of landscapes and uses of color. The rest was a total mess.

The sequel seems to have a taken a drastic turn for the worst as it takes place in a "apocalyptic world" in which the ladies battle evil corporations and metal faced madmen.

I would have to agree. Though I am not a huge fan/buff of this filmmaking style, I do have a passive interest in this genre and enjoy them when the mood strikes me. The Chinese Ghost Story series, Bride With White Hair, Boxer's Omen (and other Shaw Brothers material)...these are all films I quite enjoy. The photography and visual style of Heroic Trio is quite nice, but the acting, storyline, etc. were absurdly over-the-top and slapstick. The English dubbing was so, SO bad. I honestly had to turn the flick off about half way through as the dubbing resulted in a massively annoying experience with an off-the-chart cringe factor. Granted I'm not a fan of dubbed movies as I feel they typically tend to suck the life out of a film, but this is one of the worst examples of dubbing that I have ever seen. If I had the option to watch it in it's original language with subtitles it would have been a much better cinematic experience.

I have to agree with you. Although I like it for what it is (campy over the top low budget supernatural modernday wuxia film), I couldn't help thinking how much better it could've been. Now it's a mediocre solely interesting becuase of its cast, but it could've been awesome of only the script had some more focus and the fight scenes were better. Like Iron Monkey-better. Heroic Trio looks like an 80's movie compared to that one, but they're from the same year.

I wanted to like it, and I paid money for it so I'm gonna like it, but while watching it this evening a little voice in my head went "remake....remake....remake...". Hell, maybe Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung would be up for it. :-D

If they were given the budget at the time, I'm sure the quality would've been better. Since, this was the heyday of Hong Kong films, most of them were made on shoe string budgets. It's unfortunate, but I still enjoy the films for what they are and think that it's still fun to watch. Even now, China and Hong Kong don't spend nearly as much on their films as Hollywood does.
