Just a point, but Michael Riley was only 29, maybe 30 in this film.
IMBD says he was born in 1962, and 'To Catch a Killer' was made in 1991.
He looks older than that, and in the movie he has a teenage son aged about 15 or 16...

The real-life Kozenzack was younger looking than his age at the time of the investigation (I think in real life he was in his late thirties, maybe forty), and it's true that there was some flack among the Des Plaines force that someone that young was promoted over men of greater age. Riley is pretty youthful-looking in the film, though I think he can convincingly pass for mid-thirties or so.
