Poor casting choice of Val Kilmer

Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying he didn't act the part well...however, with all of the jokes about his obvious Indian looks, he doesn't seem to have ANY Indian blood at all! Couldn't they have cast someone who actually looked the part? For example, wouldn't it have made more sense to cast someone like Lou Diamond Phillips in his place?

From the IMDB trivia page for Thunderheart:
"In the movie, Val Kilmer plays a character who is 1/4th Sioux. In real life, he is 1/4th Cherokee."

reply

In the movie, Kilmer's boss says "Your real father was HALF", that makes Kilmer's character 1/4 Indian.

Nothing unusual for a 1/4 Indian to NOT look like typical Indian.

reply

Actually Val Kilmer looks very VERY Indian, look at his features, not the color of his hair, skin or eyes. Also, LDP is not Indian nor does he have any Indian blood, he is Filipino.

Yes, and a lot of redhaired Irishmen ARE Indian, and vice versa. And also, long before Columbus landed, there was a Native tribe made up of red-haired, blue-eyed people. All Native American groups migrated here from other places, and not all came from the same Siberian/Asian stock.

Really? That's news to me. Not sayin your wrong but where did you ever hear that at? Are you sure those weren't Vikings? LOL I come from an Indian background (Cherokee) myself & I never ever saw or heard of Indians with fair complexion & blue eyes. The only native american people i've ever seen like that are people like myself who are mixed. Not full blood Indians.

Lou Diamond Upchurch (Phillips) most certainly does have Native blood:
from imdb:
Is of Spanish, Scottish/Irish, Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian, and Cherokee ancestry.

reply

I doubt he has rNA or Hawaiian blood actually. A lot of filams like to claim non-existing Hawaiian ancestry and a lot of Americans like to claim non-existing NA ancestry, LDP is both. He also hoped the NA to get roles, better to be NA than Filipino, you won't get a lot of Filipino roles but a lot of NA roles. He is a fake NA,

reply

Kilmer does have Indian traits. A good portion of Americans have native blood.

He did well in this movie I thought.

reply

His bone structure and the shape of his eyes are very obviously native. Never mind the hair colour. When I first saw him, not having read anything about him, I knew he was either part native or part oriental/asian.

Dark hair alone doesn't make someone look native. Remember the old western films, white people with wigs?!

reply

He was perfect choice for this movie. And he was great in it.
Thunderheart is the best movie ever made.

reply

This is Val Kilmer's best role, he was perfectly cast in this film.

reply

Well, he is one quarter Cherokee, and I see it.

reply

Kilmer was excellent and had great chemistry with Graham Greene. i thought the entire cast was great, Sam Shephard never disappoints either.
