DON'T READ THE BOOK!

reading the book right after the movie just killed it for me...i mean you get more details and everything but it's just weird...the author jumps around from time era to time era.. like when alice is a young girl..to cheryl..to that night..to when alice is grown up.....it's really weird and it will just ruin it for you if you've already seen the movie..the ending of the book is really horrible too..rick and sheryl end up marring other people and having other kids!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! just DON'T read it!!!!!!

For once I have to agree. Usually I find the book is better than the film, but in this case the movie was just wonderful and the book was damned depressing. Stick to the film.

I actually like the book. It's not happy by any means but it's a good read and it was definitely interesting to see what the basis for the film was :)

Actually, I absolutely loved the book. In fact, I had read the book first not knowing there was a movie. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I am looking forward to seeing how it racks up. That Night by Alice McDermott made its way onto my favorite's list.

"That Night" is a great book - I have not seen the film but it sounds as if the writer/director altered the book considerably for the movie - this is not uncommon as what makes a book great will not necessarily appeal to a movie audience. However, the book was quite critically acclaimed and was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize, the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
