Just a quick question . . .

I know that this series has been produced in several different formats over the decade or so that it's been around, including OVA's, television series, and movies. I recently purchased the Tenchi Muyo OVA boxed set off Amazon. I thought it was complete, until i logged onto IMDB and saw that there appear to be 25 episodes. The boxed set only has 13. Did i get ripped off or am i simply on the wrong page? I'm kind of confused. Please respond.

You bought the Tenchi Muyo! (OVA) Box set, but were probably looking Tenchi Universe up on IMDB. Here's a quick little guide for you:

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki has 13 episodes:

Ryoko Resurrected
Here Comes Ayeka!
Hello Ryo-Ohki!
Mihoshi Falls to the Land of the Stars
Kagato Attacks!
We Need Tenchi
Ryo-Ohki Special: The Night Before the Carnival
Hello Baby!
Sasami and Tsunami
I Love Tenchi!
The Advent of the Goddess
Zero Ryoko
Here comes Jurai!

Then there was "episode 14" Mihoshi Special: Galaxy Police Mihoshi's Space Adventure which introduced Pretty Sammy

There were a couple Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVA's (I think)

and

Pretty Sammy had 26 episodes with Magical Project S:

First Contact
The Crash Course
Test! Test! Test!
Jump Over the Top
Debut! The Star Sammy
Dodge Ball Battle
Talent for Trouble
Mid-Summer Santa”
The Island of Love-Love Monsters
East vs. West
Lost Baton
The Blue Sky Rangers
All I Want Is You
The Fellow Called Boss
Baby Sammy
The Team, ‘Lovely Madams’
Farewell, the Team, ‘Lovely Madams’
You Are the Sunshine Girl
The Magic Fades Away
Friends
I'm Glad to Have the Mystic Force
The Third Magical Girl Is Coming
Goddess of Destruction
The Moon Must Be Hell
New Technology
Magical Victory

Tenchi Universe has 26 episodes:

No Need for Discussions
No Need for a Princess
No Need for Worries
No Need for Monsters
No Need for Partners
No Need for Resident Officers
No Need for a Carnival
No Need for a Genius
No Need for Memories
No Need for an Arch Rival
Time and Space Adventures (1)
Time and Space Adventures (2)
Time and Space Adventures (3)
No Need for a Rebellion
No Need for an Escape
No Need for Hiding
No Need for Hunger
No Need for a Ghost
No Need for Runaways
No Need for Swimsuits
No Need for a Checkpoint
No Need for Knights
No Need for Karma
No Need for Ryoko
No Need for a Showdown
No Need for a Conclusion

Then came the movie Tenchi Muyo! In Love

Tenchi in Tokyo has 26 episodes:

Separation Anxiety
Four's a Crowd
Long Distance Lunacy
The Eternal Pledge
Money! Money! Money!
Play Date
The Day We Met
Tenchi Anniversary
The Guardians of Old
Ryoko's Big Date

Then two more movies:

Tenchi Muyo! Daughter of Darkness
Tenchi Forever

Tenchi Muyo! GXP has 26 episodes:

(but I don't want to talk about it)

And now we have Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (yet another OVA) but I honestly don't know too much about it (How many episodes - or when they'll be released in the US) so if someone else can help out that would be great. All I know for sure is that there are at least 6 episodes - but I sure hope there are more!

Hope this clears things up for you a bit.

(God, I need to get out more!)

Wow, thanks a lot. I was pretty confused about the order and number of Tenchi products out there but that clears up a lot of questions for me. Thanks for the info!

this helped me aswell, i also read that the newly release Tenchi Muyô!Ryo OhKI (season 2) which has been released in Summer of 2005. (not even on the IMDb yet of this writing.)

i took this from a review on the GXP series (galaxy police) on IMDB

the new tenchi muyo series is supposed to follow that of the original OVA, although the reviewer said GXP is way better but i still want to watch it all either way. just because...

I read on Animenation that Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki will be a 3 dvd set with
3 episodes each I believe. It will be the finale to the OVA. Or so they
say. People always talk about how an Anime is over but seriously. You
don't think that in the next 50 years someone will pickup your favorite
series and run with it? Forever is a long time coming. I also read they
are currently working on a new Pretty Sammy series. You can find a link for
it over at Animenation. People talk about how series like Dragonball and Evangelion are done, but I won't be surprised if maybe 10 or 20 years down the
road they resurect them. Kinda like when WB made the Duck Dodgers series
based on a single looney tunes episode from the 40s or the 50s. Who wouldve
saw that one coming?

reply

I like the new Tenchi series so far. Gxp is pretty good also.

Got Bacon?

reply

I feel they are going to end tenchi muyo with the final episode being number 26 (my personal opinion)

Then they are going to merge tenchi muyo! ryo-ohki and tenchi muyo GXP

reply

The strange thing with Tenchi all the series. Is the Original OVA, Gxp, and the new OVA are considered the official canon timeline. Considering it was created by Kajishima Masaki himself. I keep getting mixed reports but GXP either takes place in part during the new OVA or afterwards. Since they are taking there freakin time realeseing the rest of it. It's hard to tell for sure.

The basis for Tenchi Universe came from his former writing partner who took the Tenchi charector in a differn't direction. Although I'm not sure for Tenchi in Tokyo, while another alternate unviverse, it might be based off her writings also. Same goes for the movies 1 and 3 are defenate Sequals to the TV series while Daughter of Darkness is still being debated.

If you want to see something truly confusing check out this family tree. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=222 contains some spoilers but it will make alot of sense for those trying to figure out how everyones related to each other. This references the OVA's and GXP in peticular and not the extended universe(s).

reply

Actually if you want to know GXP actually takes place after the new OVA series, since some of the events that occured in some of later episodes (That haven't been released in the US yet) are shown in GXP okay.

reply

Also for those who want to know on the episodes of OVA 3 not only are there 6 episodes that cover episode 14-19 of the OVA series but also a special 20th episode that reveals what happens afterwards and reveals the truth about Tenchi's mother Kiyone Masaki. All of these episodes will be released in September and November 2006 (I am already annoyed that Funimation will wait that long to release them).

Also to set the record straight about Tenchi's mother, her name is Kiyone originally, but for Tenchi Muyo! in Love since it was part of the Tenchi Universe continuity to avoid confusion with Mihoshi's partner Kiyone, her name was changed to Achika for that reason.

i just saw the last OVA(the 3rd 1),i can tell u,ITS GREAT!!!really good anime,i think its 1 of the best of the tenchi series, even thouhg GXP its really good...they r in the same timeline, anyway i saw it on youtube.com go to see it if ur intrested and anyway its some crazy OVA that 1.the producers want to make a 4th too.

reply

Yeah I watched the subbed versions at youtube, and nothing was solved ended or put to rest. They just created more questions. I was kinda dissapointed because I have waited over a friggin year for funimation to get their asses in gear and release the next two volumes (volume 2 is out now I have already mail ordered my copy from Animenation:).

In the meantime I have been watching the second season of Ah My Goddess
in fansubbed version. Awesome series. Hoping for a third season.

reply

I also saw the fansubs at Youtube as well but they did not have the 20th episode Plus 1 (Which is going to be given the same name as the third Dvd for the English title; Final Confrontations). So I guess I'll have to wait until November 28th like everyone else which is the day that the final Dvd is going to be released.

Although the Final Dvd will only have ONE episode it will be loaded with special features. For more information check at the Dvd section at the official Funimation Tenchi Muyo! website at www.tenchireturns.com

I will admit that the idea of having only one episode with special features is kinda cheap. But anyway both Amazon.com and rightstuf.com have the pre-order info for the third volume.

reply

To be more precise the 20th episode (7th in the Funimation count) was released on September 5th 2005 a little over a month from the release date on the first Funimation volume here in the states. I also know that no fansubs of that episode were ever made. I just did a double check on Youtube and confirmed that episode is not posted on that site. Although the 19th episode (6th in the Funimation count) which is titled Z was originally presented in the form of the final episode it is not really the last episode.
