A live action movie would be hard to do, more because you'd have to widdle the story down to something that could fit in a two hour movie. And if it was an American produced movie, some of the Japanese cultural aspect would have to be altered.
But I think a live action Tenchi movie could be pretty sucessful. It has the action to appeal to guys, the romance for the women in the audience, the sci-fi aspect for all the internet nerds out there, and the wacky comedy for most every one else. I suppose its something that could even happen if some of the upcoming adaptations of anime are successful. Still, it would be a risky move for a major studeo. And a movie would definately be PG-13, which means all the nudity would go, sadly.
Anyway, my dream cast/crew:
Tenchi: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Ryoko: Rachel Weisz
Aeka: Laura Harris
Sasami: Catinca Untaru
Mihosi: Heather Graham
Washu: Alyson Hannigan
Kagato: Hugo Weaving
Yosho: Patrick Stewert
Nobiyoki: Fred Willard
Directed by: Matthew Vaughn (Because "Stardust" proved he can perfectly balance romance, comedy, fantasy, and action.)
Music by: Howard Shore
Ryo-Ohki would be CGI or a puppet. I don't know who I'd cast as Tsunami, someone really stunningly beautiful. Alex Proyas or Tarsem would also be good choices for director.
Its fun to think about but I'd rather it not happen. An American made live-action Tenchi has too much potential to be a mess.
